My desktop picture has been the milkgirls quite a while and when I first played this 1080p footage I thought I was kind of hallucinated - those two girls had been standstill and suddenly came to life ! It's something I'd never seen before for sure.
Hats off to Jim and his team !!

Thanks for getting this up online. Do we need to be on bittorrent to help mirror it or merely host it with a link?

Around 90% according to the datarate

I actually set it at 75%.. not to save disk space, but to make the bitrate low enough for it to run on peoples systems.

As good as this footage looks.. its nowhere near as good as it looks in its full 4k originaly state.. Again, its still odd for me to hafta down rez things TWICE to get to 1080p :)

... most impressive...
Obi Wan has taught them well...

Yeah, seriously Jarred. Shrinking down the image twice just to get it down to the size Star Wars III was captured in. Mind-blowing.

WOW. All this talk about 4k for so long, actually playing this downsized twice on my monitor makes me realize how much I am taking all this for granted. This is . . . *we're running out of adjectives to use, here*--uhm . . . Chocolatey!

Jim you have no idea what this camera means to me and the projects that are already forming because of it.
Exactly... And the partnerships that are already forming 'cause of it (RED & dvxuser.com), right Andrew? ;-)

That's right Emanuel! The facts of content production flexibilty are not lost on me. Before RED, I was looking at three seperate camera systems to produce the various things I wanted too for broadcast (as I have in the past--but complete ownership for me was key-- and those were big numbers). But to have a system that allows me to move seamlessly (and control internal costs without sacrificing quality) from indie film, broadcast tv, commercial/promo, corporate, community service promo depending how the camera is set up, need for crew and storytelling is incredibly powerful. The relationships with like minded, talented content producers (filmmakers) will prove to be even more powerful, organic -- and profitable in many respects.

Cheers-- Andrew

Ps- E, I may something we can work out together... but I have an edit to get back to...

earthling-bring it into ae or a similar program, and do a ram preview..smooth playback

I'm not having any playback problems. The footage is beautiful, plays back fine on my dual G5 2GHz with a Dell 24", i'm just talking about near the end of the shot, the girl on the right moves quickly back and forth. Particularly while she's moving forward, her movements appear somewhat stuttery (is that a word?). Is no one else seeing this ?

Don't get me wrong. I'm rooting for this cam, I've got a reservation in, but I must say all these ooohs and aaahs are kind of tiring, and not constructive. I'm not saying theses images don't look great, but let's try and analyse them, what are we seeing here ? Apart from beautiful girls, awesome shallow DOF, wonderful color rendition, nice latitude (although you can't judge the range from this kind of shot), I'm seeing some... well, some odd motion rendering. This could be due to the resizing, hi shutter speed, something else?

Anyhow, how are the test cams coming along? I'm looking forward to seeing footage from one of those, hopefully some 4k footage.

Cheers,
Damien

Yes we see the same effect. G5 2.7GHz with a HP 23" 2335 LCD.
A stutter or jitter effect in her movement near the end of the clip.
Is it Quicktime, compression, Redcode, the camera, the shutter speed?

I'm not overly concerned. I see this clip as a sample of the potential of the camera and I'm more than happy with the potential being shown.

The motion rendering is a result of the compression. A motion blur will lose a lot of its "natural look" when compressed from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2, particularly with vibrant colors like her bandana. Pause the movie on a frame with lots of motion and blow the movie up to 200% to see what I'm talking about.

For all PC users having trouble to smoothly playback this quicktime file:
I had the same stuttering on my Core2Duo with the quicktime player.
But you can try to use the http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm
It can be installed parallel to an existing quicktime without troubles - just choose to install it anyway without installing quicktime first.

Then start the player and go to -> view -> options -> playback -> output and set Quicktime Video to "DirectX 7" or if that doesn't work to "DirectX 9". Tick the checkbox for "Lock back-buffer..."

That should do the trick and you get a smooth playback because now the overlay mode of your graphic card is used.

If you are watching it on a TFT like I do, remember that you are watching a 24fps movie on a screen with 60 Hz which won't lead to a smooth playback anyway. On a CRT you could switch to 72 Hz which should give you a perfect playback.

Usually I have my share of tech issue with my computers, but this clip plays very smooth on both my new macbook pro (not duo core) and my old dual 2.0 powermac. Smooth like butta.

Hey for once I'm not the one with issues. Yippie.

L O L. Downrezzing TWICE to get to 1080p. Not a single touch of noise. Motion is fine playing back on my Monitor AND my HDTV in 1080i and 720p. LOOK AT THE COLOR RED IN THAT BANDANA! L O O O L OL OL I'm hysterical with laughter.

And then, the announcement of the mini-Raid in the other thread.

Wow. The Red Team is destroying every cam manufacturer.

Thanks for sharing.
