- RECURRENCE - a MAH Film

Thanks, Mark. Mood and tension was what I was going for.

Dre83, I think I passed your sound test! :)
I'm thrilled about that. And yeah, you nailed the sounds. I forgot to add, the falling glass on the stairs was also mixed with the camera mic capture.

Thanks, guys!

there are some tricks to know if it's sound from a cam mic or boom mic in the room or if it's Foley....

if the Foley sounds are adapted to the room and other sounds from that room which are direct sounds...it's more difficult to point them.

But here the foley sounds are more "dry", less reverb sounding then the original used sounds.

And also the logical thinking: the footsteps were Foley already, the breathing also... and I don't think you had a trained mouse that ran into the pipelines ? :-p
So few things are kept over. Touching the frame...could be, but it was not 100% in sync...

I usually set up a few auxillary effect channels and then choose reverbs that suit the room's ambience. Then i route the foley into that aux channel.
That way the foley becomes more subtle and blends in better. I'm not talking about this film, just saying that's a technique that helps make the foley cohesive.

I loved the the suspense of the film and the setting of the abandoned TV station. The music, especially Auld Lang Syne, was excellent and the overall development of the story without any dialogue is very powerful. I just wished that the news article shot was longer to allow the audience to read more of it as it contained a lot of important content related about the story. Other than that, this is one of my favorite films in the contest. :)

I am still wondering about the final scene as the door slams and what that means...

Hi Mike,

your film took my attention the whole time. The location and acting was great. The production quality as well. The only thing - I didn't really get the story - sorry!

Susanne

Good work as usual Mike - lots of tension without much happening, something you have got pretty good at: I'm not exactly sure what was going on, but I think that was maybe your intention. It has a little bit of a Twilighty feel, maybe. The newspaper cutting... not giving us a long look at it, I think maybe that's intentional too, to keep the audience guessing - you feel there's meaning there but it's elusive, just beyond your reach. The sound seemed fine to me - I'll have to listen again with my headphones to see if I can spot anything wrong .

Wow! Thanks so much.

Yeah, the clipping is a full article with plenty of details about what happened and who he is but I just shared a glance. :)

The door closing is up to you. Personally, to me, it represents that he's trapped. As does the present with chain link fencing. Forever in limbo.

There is story but it really is up to you to interpret what you can based on what's given. Lots of blanks to fill in.

You nailed it as usual. I could show you the full article but that wouldn't be much fun now would it. :)

I enjoy it when people put a little of their own imagination into it. After such a detailed story last fest (At Last) I wanted to step back and create something moody and possibly captivating. It's tough to make a guy walking around a building interesting.

No go throw on those headphones! LOL! :)

This was well produced but IMO relied too much on the newspaper clipping. We could get it from the title of the clipping but it wasn't sold by the rest of the film.

The camera work was excellent.

Well done.

You're singing my song with this one, Mike. My only squeak is you made me wait too long for the goods. The jumps didn't scare me at all. However, that photo album and x-mas ornament, scared the schit out of me. So there you have it. I felt like he was seeing something that already happened. But I don't want to know. Not knowing is something I excel at. The production was solid. Sound was creepy and clean. Some interesting shots and you opened this one up which I really enjoyed. I think those jumps would have worked better of you lead them with a patch of quiet. That's a nit pick. Thumbs way up, this is my kinda short.

I really appreciate that. I agree completely. And yeah, that last room is my favorite. :)

Glad you got into it. Thanks again. You made my day.

This one should have made the finals for sure. Your level of professionalism was top-notch. The sound design and cinematography was very good and most of the films IMO struggled a bit with these. Especially sound design.

Hey Mike,

I can certainly relate to finding a wicked derelict location and getting the best out of it with no lights and no crew, so I'm on the same page as you here :-)

As some have pointed out it did feel like a showcase for the building in the first few minutes, but I got into it more as the piece went on. I loved the shot of the glass hitting the floor behind him. Loved the use of the sound echoing in different rooms, but I'm bound to say that as I did the same with my music box. It's such an 80's horror homage. lol.

I get from the title that he's caught in a cycle or loop, but any more than that, or what happened to him... I was in the dark. I also get from the feedback here that's all you wanted the audience know, so I'll say no more.

It felt to me like you found the location and then made a short to fit around it, rather than writing a script and finding a location to suit it. But that's my only caveat. It's a moody, well shot, well executed piece.
