Pics from the set

A period piece, set in the 1950s. The entire short takes place in a '56 Chevy.

We only had the process trailer for one of the two days. Though the second day was mostly stationary, we did have a couple of driving shots. The car was full (shot POV) with two actors, camera, and director. So where do I end up?

Ran the snake through the rear, passenger side window to the camera. No problem.

Open trunk and laws of physics kept me in a cloud of exhaust during the drive. That was a problem.

By the time we got back to the starting point, I was a little light-headed. The best part was coming back down the hill after we were done. Joel gunned it (I was still wearing my headphones), and suddenly he stops the car. "Oh, crap! Alex is still in the trunk, isn't he?"

It's nice to be remembered.

Never get in a car to shoot without a professional driver. This includes the interior, not just the trunk. Actors are not professional drivers. Put the bag inside, set conservative level and press record. It's not like a reel-reel take's going to run-out. What's you life worth? You will understand better when you get older and wiser.

Well, I didn't think that this thread was about berating others. It won't tread if that happens.

I've been in the business long enough, and while it wasn't the best scenario, the car was traveling incredibly slow on a winding, curvy road in a state park. The road was closed at both ends with secure road blocks. There was a truck driving ahead of the car with a 6k light and generator, and it set the driving pace. And between the incline and the tight turns, there was no way to go very fast and still keep the light on the car.

Would I recommend this setup to anyone else? Absolutely not... which would be why I put it out there with the warning that I did get a dose of CO in the process.

Hey C2V those are great pics btw. Just curious though what was your set up for that gig? Looks like 2 lectros and SD 442? I really can't tell though. Good examples guys keep them coming. I will have to go through my sd cards to see if my photos from prior gigs are still on them.

Sadly, no Sound Devices. I was using a rental kit with Shure FP33. This was a couple years ago, and I still had an FP33 at the time as well. Ran straight into the RED and then the Shure's Tape Out to a Zoom H4 as a backup.

Had Lectro units and a couple of the older AT U101 systems (great systems, unlike the new 1800 series). The whole thing was two actors, two mics. The Lectro units they gave me were the older VHF units (non-diversity), and the lavs were crap. Since I had B6s with the AT units, that's what I used.

The Zoom came in quite handy on the second day. I was one of the last crew to head down the hill where we were shooting stationary, and I rode down with the car's owner. Gave me a chance to record some in-car ambients.

Alan I feel your pain. That was one huge load. If I remeber my heaviest rig was:

2 Lectro tx to 2 cameras
2 Lectro IFB txs
4 Lectro rx (3 talent 1 boom pole/ Senn MKH 416)
1 Shure FP33
1 SD 302
1 Tascam HD-P2

The sad part was that I did not have the proper bag for all of this stuff. I will get a bigger bag soon but need more paying gigs first. I really wished I had taken a picture of that setup but it was a one day gig and at that time my phone did not take pictures.

C2V what part of TN are you from? I am from Memphis. I still have 3 of the AT U101s. I don't plan on getting rid of them anytime soon. Although I would like them to be Lectros but that will have to be later be cause some people want you to work for free or at a much lower rate for professional service.

Opposite ends of the state.

Nice. My brother-in-law is down there, and I have several other friends in Memphis.

That's why i own less expensive wireless for my smaller projects and rent the big stuff when needed.

Here's a pic of the heaviest rig I've ever had to deal with.
It was well over 40lbs.
It was for a well known reality show and it was also the job that
I decided was my LAST reality show.

Nice set up Alan!

If you want your gear to feel lighter don't wear all black in the middle of an outdoor summer shoot :violent5:

I'm sure it sounds great !

Were they driving that tank around ?

Weekend of August 07/08, 2010

Here's another shot of me with the tank in the background. We were firing blanks, but LOUD!

That is a huge setup. I don't like doing reality shows but if it will help to pay the bills i'll take it.

BTW what are those grey boxes in the mixer compartment?

2!!! nickle metal hydride NP1 batts to power that mess.

That show switched over to lithiums the week I was there
and helped out for run-time but as far as weight it was pissing in the wind.

Hi Tim!

The tank was stationary for the weekend. Two weekends before, they had to drive the tank around with helicopters circling around the area. Missed that one.

About the black, It was colder than exppected. I drove to set and realizaed that it was cold w/ direct sunlight at the same time. Weird

Last minute, I had to re-organize my bag just to sit the R4 nicely. Moved the 702T into the front pouch, then the IFB and Lectros, R4 below that, and the 302 was lost in plain sight. Lost my mind for the rest of the day.
I'll wait to see if the still photographer has a picture of the rig.
