Along with piggin straps for any over the shoulder work I really recommend a coiled cable.
Expensive compared to regular xlr cables but I guarantee the moment you get it you'll be glad you did.

Great information. Will be useful if I ever have to do something similar. Any thick blanket can do?
 
Here's one from last summer. Working on an ambitious, really great short film. Talented cast, director and DP.

We were shooting a key scene with the two principal actors on a school bus. This was followed by an hour or so of moving shots inside the (very) warm bus as we jounced and bounced over marginal roads. I wish there were some good shots of me trying to brace myself in the aisle of the bus while routing the boom over and between the heads of the director, camera op, 1st AC, script supervisor, etc., etc. Now that would have been a hero shot !

I've been working on a history channel show up in the mountains of NC. its been a pretty rough shoot. cold, rain, snow, wind. In the bag is a nomad, sra, 2 411's and 2 211's while hopping to 2 cameras with sra's.
