Gentlemen.... (P2 beep)

Jan, Just to clarify,
so if we have not updated our firmware for the 16 gig cards, and we have not had the audio issues with 8 gig cards, am I right that it would still be safe to update the firmware?

Thanks for your help with this.

Hi Ted,

You should update your firmware. I don't believe that is the issue at all, otherwise there would be a software update to run to resolve what the upgrade to 16GB cards did. I don't believe it is across the board as far as experiences go.

Best

I just want to say thanks again Jan for jumping in here and being on top of this! It's always great to see the kind of attentiveness and responsiveness you provide the HVX/DVX community!

Beyond the absolute horror of the P2 Beep noise embedded in the audio, what have those facing this situation been doing regarding filming?

I just noticed the beep sound this afternoon. The beep has destroyed the last two days of filming for me. Filming I cannot re-shoot.

My film is ruined...what are the rest of you doing about it?

No way the record the audio in post? Its not the same, but about 80% of the movies do it. Keep the original audio for actor's reference, and record over it. You can get everything together in 2 days depending the lenght of your movie.

If it is a documentary, however, this is not an option...

You can probably EQ out the beeps with fair effectiveness. You'll change the character of the dialog a little, but not terribly.

If you have a multi-band noise gate plugin/processor somewhere, you can use likely that to get rid of the beeps in the quiet parts where they're most noticeable, without effecting the character of the dialogue.

Alternatively, you can try to ADD more of the beeping sound - that is, find the frequency spectrum of the beeping, and make it constant rather than separate beeps. Doing that carefully might mask the sound, and if the level is low enough relative to your dialogue, may make the beeping pretty invisible.

Better not to have the beeping in the first place, of course... but I think "ruined" is a little extreme unless your beeping is a lot worse than any I've heard. Find a competent audio person and let 'em take a crack at it!

Has anyone sent their camera in yet? Im going to contact them today. How long will my HVX be out of my hands? In other words, how long will my production be shut down for while waiting for this fix? UGH!!!!

ADR and all that fun post audio stuff cost's money...lot's of money, and lot's of time. Flying people back to NY to do ADR is not in my budget. Who's gonna pay for it? Im one of those lone, maverick filmmaker guys who finances everything. This means that money and time are tight. Dont get me wrong, Im gratefull there are solutions. But what good is a solution if you cannot afford it?

Do I sound bitter? Maybe I am.

This is still a fantastic camera and a dream come true for most of us, and Jan Livingston's speedy response on this issue is highly commendable and duely noted.

Im gonna throw it out there: A complimentary P2 card for our troubles, time, and expense. This is not unreasonable, and would at least make good on some level....

I just got my hands on a European HVX, brand new (made in December 2007), 16GB card .. no beep that I can find.

So (obviously) it's not all units and/or all 16GB cards.

Little bit of good news

I just spoke to someone over at Panasonic in Secaucus New Jersey. Very nice guy. Im gonna bring my camera in this week and he said it should take about a day. He knew exactly what the poblem was and assured me that once fixed, the beep will not return

I live about 20 minutes from Secaucus so Im gonna drive the camera over and pick it up.

Sorry about my prior rant (above) It's just that I dont need the extra expenses for this project and I guess the whole thing just got to me...

Thanks to everyone for all your help and support. Panasonic is on top of this

Interesting - I was just told (in LA) that it's more than a single-day job, with the goal being 3-5 day turnaround...

Thank you for starting this thread, and to Panasonic for responding.

I just sent an e-mail to Panasonic. I'm located in LA as well. Will report back when I get a response and service.

I live in the LA area, is there a place I can drop off my HVX so it does not have to be shipped, and I can pick it up too?

Well, the guy at Pannyin LA sent me an email telling me to call him to arrange things... but all I got today was the answering machine...

I just got home from Panasonic in Secaucus. I dropped off my camera and they said it would be about a day to fix. The service man was very nice.

Ill keep eveyone posted on the fix once i get it back and test a few dozen times

They happen to say what is they do to the camera to get rid of the beep? If you can ask, when you pick it up.
