Hi...

Try this on for size....

I have a 2.5 hour feature film that I need to get on DVD. It's on my computer now... cut on PPRO 1.5

I've done it all..... 2 disk set 4.7GB each(yuch)..... ONE 8.5 DVD.... -R... +R....
Sony.... HP..... Maxell.... the list goes on and on and on.....
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plays on some... not all... won't play on this one... will play on that one.... I QUIT!!!!

Let's start fresh.

All I want is my movie to be on ONE dvd...(8.5GB) and have it PLAY on ANY dvd player (region1) in the U.S.A.... you know, like the movies we all rent at Blockbuster.... a normal dvd that will play on ANY dvd player without problems.

Yes, I'm willing to pay for this..... just tell me where to go..... I'm in Los Angeles, the movie capital of the world and I can't find a place that will make a dvd for me???? (8.5 GB master) 148 minutes run time.

I know it is possible.... I've rented movies on 1 dvd that are longer than 2 hours..... where do the studios go to make these mysterious dvds????

HHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLPP!!!!!!

Really... I need help!

I'm willing to bring in my computer....and my check book.... anywhere in L.A. to have a master dvd made of my film. The master must be able to play on ANY dvd...like the pro's.... and I need to make 200 or more copies of it, again, that will play on any DVD.

Any advice will be greatly honered with great respect!!!

Darryl :)

You'll need to get a glass-stamped master replicated. You will not ever be able to make a home-burnt DVD that will have 100% compatibility, not now, not ever. It's one of the most infuriating aspects of DVD production.

The only way to do it is to take it to a replicator and have them produce it for you. Minimum replication quantities are usually 1000 or more. I use www.cdtechnical.com, they've done a great job.

Thanks!!! glass stamped master... wow... I had a feeling there was something us Indy dvd makers were missing.... this "make your own dvd at home" is such a joke! I've sent my own dvd's to many film festivals only to have about half of them say they can't play them.... driving me nuts!

Thanks for the link... I'm using it!

Hey Barry...
What's the best way to go.....

They make a master, then if I want 300 copies, those are replications? or ...?? so confusing....

My goal is to have 300 dvd's that will play in any dvd player. What do you think the best way to go?

PimpDaddyDA,

With a number like 300, it's a toss up. The best deals on replication really start at the 1000 mark. While your home burner may be tossing out coasters, reputable DUPLICATION houses can get you DVDs with 98% player compatibility and a much cheaper rate.

However, if you want the sure fire, pro solution, then replication is the way to go. I like discmakers.com you can search around and find cheaper, but these guys are quality.

This deal: http://www.discmakers.com/film/products/dvdb101.asp
is 300 DVDs (actually 360) with printing and Jewel cases for about 1000 dollars. Or, you can get 1000 DVDs for the same price printed, but without jewel cases.

Give or take a 100 dollars or so, that is the going rate for replication.

My humble opinion for film festivals is to stick to duplication, but with a reputable burner. You don't want to send a bunch of fancy packaging to a festival. Wait till you get into Sundance, then bring the fancy DVDs :)

you need to send it out to get a glass master that way it will play on every machine. You are in La and u cant find anyone, heheheh. All the glass mastering gets done in LA.

i'm currently getting my project ready for replication, it isnt a cheap thing tho. The more copies you make the cheaper it gets, just so u know.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm dealing with the same issues. I get that a duplicated DVD will never have 100% compatibility (which is annoying), but I want to verify, or at least get opinions on whether having my DVD burned at a duplicating facility will really result in a better success rate than burning the discs at home.

I use DVD Studio pro, from the FCP HD Studio package, on a dual processor G5 with a Pioneer DVD drive. I've had really mixed success on the DVDs I've burned.

I have a project that I need to get out for a client, 100 DVDs that are going out to high end donors in a pitch for contributions, and the client and I are both really concerned about discs not playing. The client is a small non-profit, so replication, and the large number of discs needed for a replication job is not in the mix.

Any suggestions on how I can stack the odds would be very helpful.

Robert

Oops, sorry - I didn't realize this was in the Premiere room. I did a search, like I'm supposed to, and then ran with what I found. If someone can re-post this in a more appropriate location, I'd appreciate it.
