Gentlemen.... (P2 beep)

Nobody records their master audio to the camera. The camera is generally much too far away from the subject for even a shotgun mic to be even remotely effective.

ya but you can have your sound mixer feed his signal to camera, or to go completely ghetto, you can just plug a shotgun into the cam on a long cable and have someone boom. lot's of people do it this way. it's asking for trouble but happens all the time. i learned my lesson and i try to steer clear of recording to cam.

Documentary and reality both shoot mix-down to the camera as a standard operating procedure. Going double-system isn't going to be the answer for many users who shoot television with P2.

It won't be any good for the reported hundreds of news outlets that have adopted P2 as well. They're always single-system.

Fix it Panasonic.

Hergozis,

I am coming to the post a little late but, if the problem is a beep you can remove it by using spectral analyzer software and only removing those frequencies. Perfect tones like beeps (cell phone ring tones) leave a very clean footprint and can be extracted with out effecting the ambience of the scene. I have not heard the noise (or beep), but if you would like I am willing to take a look at it ( I have few few hours this weekend) . From there maybe I can direct you to a solution that might save your project. Just send me a 10 second audio clip and I'll see what I can do. emre (at) productionpit (dot) com

My 8 gig cards are looking pretty good to me at the moment.

Can you please do a test for us? Just put on your headphones, set your inputs for line in, set your gains to max with nothing connected, and hit record!

See if you hear a distinct difference in sound when recording to the 8GB cards; and, if you can and do, characterize the sound?

Thanks!

...but can you try the controlled test I've been running? The sound will probably not be beeps. The 4GB cards make a noise like a modem - sorta random screeching, but distinctly different and louder when recording.

Thanks all

Im really blown away by everyone's response, intelligence in the matter, and willingness to help :)

I always use a boom operator. These last two filming days though required me to be alone with the actors. I wanted a somewhat closed set. I had to man the audio myself and shot mostly close ups with either my Oktava or Audio Technica mounted to the HVX.

Audio (except for the beep) turned out amazing, thanks to the great mics

I ran a test using just the HVX's internal mic thinking it might be the XLR inputs. The beep was still there.

Outdoor shoots mask the beep completely. At least to the naked ear.

Im wondering why the beep seems to mute during dialog or an other noise. I listened very closely with head phones and it seems like the beep actually needs a moment to return after, say, an actor delivers a line. The pattern breaks up and there's some silence before the beep begins again.

Do more forceful frequencies knock out the beep in some way? I am no audio expert by any means...this is purely a laymans observations

It's there... you just don't hear it! The other sounds mask it. If you bring it into a DAW/NLE and analyze the sound, the beeping is constant. Just fades in and out of noticeability due to human perception.

Have we pinpointed this to something that has happened as a cause of the new firmware? Is anyone experiencing this that has only used 8 gb cards and not the new 16gb firmware?

I ask because I'm getting ready to start shooting a documentary (with 8gb cards and old firmware) and really dont want this problem creeping up. If its going to be a possibility I'll shoot double system on sound but I'd rather not go buy a recorder right now...

Just out of curiosity...what audio channels is this occurring on? Is it all four channels or just 1&2 or 3&4?
Jim

To the people that are experiencing the beeping sound, do you have the latest firmware? I would assume you have to in-order to have the 16gb cards work.

I am still on the old firmware and have the 8gb card I have not heard this beep. Though I haven't tried the test listed on the other page. I will try it tonight and report what I hear.

Jdajda, you want information? Pease help us gather it by performing the controlled test and telling us what you get. It's easy and fast.

Will do tonight Ullanta - what's the best thread to report back my findings in? I've noticed there are a few out there.

I just put up polls, one each for HPX and HVX in their respective fora. That should be the best place!

Hi,

We have been analyzing the problem and those of you that are experiencing the problem should contact pbtscservice@us.panasonic.com. Please include your serial number, name of your dealer, your physical location, i. e. LA, NYC, or where ever and all contact info. (This helps to determine where to send your camera, Secaucus or LA.) They will tell you where to send your camera.

I hope this helps,

Jan

PS. This is for the HVX200s right now, the 500 is still under study, sorry.
