Can some one elaborate on this? In what context does "each shoot" mean here? If I'm on vacation with a 32GB card.. I'm going to keep shooting across multiple days until the card is filled.. I won't have the luxury to dump the content and reformat card. Is this fragmentation problem serious?
SD Card memory fragmentation occurs only when you delete videos and/or images and continue to record on the card. What happens is that subsequent videos may be recorded in discontiguous areas of the SD card. While this normally causes no problems, it does require a short delay for the SD card to jump between different areas of its memory. When recording videos at extremely high bitrates, this delay could cause enough additional stress to glitch the recording.

If you haven't deleted anything you've recorded on an SD card, there's little or no danger of memory fragmentation. In this case, you can continue to record videos in multiple sessions without concern.

basically, instead of deleting files off the card using your computer, put the card back in the camera and use the FORMAT function.

Ok tested out the native 24P MTS files in Vegas 9. My system is not fast enough to edit the MTS files without stuttering.. Looks like I will need to use NeoScene anyway to encode it..

Given this, what other benefit of shooting in native 24P? Should I just go back to the 60i container and use lpowell's reliability patch? After proper reverse pulldown in NeoScene, there should be no difference in quality compared to the native 24P right?

Do I save any significant storage space by shooting in 24P instead of 60i?

For version 2 of the Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch, I've prepared a choice of two INI settings files that differ only in the settings for the MJPEG 30p modes:

* For use with standard lenses, the standard patch will produce two types of MJPEG videos:

HD mode: 1280x720 HD videos in 4:2:2 color depth, with peak bitrates up to around 60Mbps.
VGA mode: 960x720 iPad-compatible videos, with peak bitrates up to 30Mbps.

* For use with anamorphic lenses, the anamorphic patch supports two different squeeze ratios:

HD mode: 1920x720 videos optimized for 1.5X anamorphic adapters, with peak bitrates up to around 50Mbps.
VGA mode: 1920x720 videos optimized for 2X anamorphic adapters, with peak bitrates up to around 50Mbps.

Thanks again lpowell. I'm sure this is a subjective thing, but are there are specific advantages to using this patch rather than the 100mbps v2 patch? It would seem to me from peoples' comments that the 100mbps Max Latitude patch captures a higher-quality image and is more stable (in 1080p24 AVCHD terms, which is all I ever shoot).

Both the Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch and the Max Latitude Native 24/25p Patch have drawbacks as well as advantages. Here's a summary of how they differ:

Blackout-Powell: Peak AVCHD bitrate is limited to 55Mbps. This requires Class 6 or higher SD cards.
Max Latitude: Peak AVCHD bitrate is limited to 100Mbps. This requires Class 10 or higher SD cards.

Blackout-Powell: FHD AVCHD mode is optimized for NTSC Native 24p recording at 1920x1080.
Max Latitude: FHD AVCHD mode is optimized for PAL Native 25p recording at 1920x1080.

Blackout-Powell: SH AVCHD mode records progressive NTSC 60p and PAL 50p video at 1280x720.
Max Latitude: SH AVCHD mode records progressive NTSC 30p and PAL 25p video at 1280x720.

You've optimized this new patch for 1.5x and 2x lenses. I have a 2x and a 1.3x.

So, If I change the HD setting from 720 to 810, that gives me the optimized size for 1.3 right?

No, the anamorphic patches are not simply a matter of changing the video frame size. The four pairs of Quality and Table settings must be changed along with other relevant MPJEG patches.

I've published combined 2X and 1.33X anamorphic patches in the MJPEG section of my 100Mbps Max Latitude Patch. If you'd prefer to use these anamorphic aspect ratios with the Blackout-Powell Patch, you can replace its MJPEG patches with the MJPEG patches from the 100Mbps Max Latitude Patch. This can most easily be done by opening the downloaded seta.ini file (Max Latitude Patch) and the setb.ini file (Blackout-Powell Patch) in separate windows in a text editor. Then highlight all MJPEG patches from setb.ini, and replace them with the MJPEG patches from seta.ini. Save the modified setb.ini file back to disk, and it will automatically be available the next time you launch PTool.
 
I'm still having major stability issues with the SH mode of this patch. Luckily, instead of a complete lockup like what happens in 1080p24, when the SH mode stops recording it just displays the error and saves the file, then you can record again. But it's still an issue.
 
Hi. I'm testing out your patch and it's look glorious. The only problem is... I can't seem to be able to produce any 720p60p files any more. All my SH shots are at 29.97.

Am I missing something?

If you're running the Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch, make sure your shutter speed is at least as fast as 1/60 second in 720p60 mode. The camera will automatically cut its frame rate in half if you set the shutter speed below the frame rate.

That's not normal for this patch. Try reinstalling maybe?
 
My bad everyone, I believe I became confused when testing both 100mbps patch and blackoutpowell patch.

Everything is looking good with this patch, although I still can't quite get a reliable SH at 60p shot exceeding 30 seconds when testing in extreme detail conditions, which may be due to my card. The FHD looks golden, but I need the combination of both. All in all, great improvements and many thanks to everyone involved. In the meantime I'll be trying to balance out the settings to create the broadest and most reliable AVCHD balance I can achieve, but I'll be holding onto the lpowell reliable patch on a card as a backup.

I also have unreliable 60fps performance on this patch. 24 is rock solid - haven't had it crash yet, even in the most extreme tests, but SH mode crashes all the time. Pretty much any outdoor shot.
 
what card are you using?

So far so good for the SH 60fps footage. I'm using a San Disk Extreme III 16gb card. I haven't tried my Transcend Class 10 16gb cards yet.

Transcend class 10 32GB. Could you please test both of your cards and let us know if one is more stable? If it's the card, that's an easy fix :D
 
I asked this in another thread, but would this patch be good for shooting longer interview takes, 30 min - 1 hour? The reliability patch was recommended for that purpose, but I really, really want to have native 24p.

Replace must also mean delete as I tried leaving in the 422 checked line of setb.ini and get instant lockups (or did I screw up something in the replace process?). Assuming no mess up, this implies that one may have 422 or 1920x810 but not both (if true, has implications for type of anamorphic lens one might use); my head is spinning from patchitis so I'll ask a probably dumb question: is there a high quality, reasonably reliable 422 patch for 1920x810? Looking for this ratio as I understand it will work with LA7200 which I hope to have attached in a couple of days (waiting for step rings). Alternatively, despite what I've seen regarding greenscreen recommendations, would Max Lat AVCHD work well for a reasonably well lit greenscreen?

Yes, to clarify any ambiguity, when transferring the MJPEG settings from one patch to another, it is crucial to copy ALL patch settings, both checked and unchecked. 4:2:2 color depth must be turned off for the MJPEG 1.33X anamorphic patch in the Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch to work properly.
