Agreed! I have to render multiple times on Final Cut when the same sequence would require no rendering on my Avid system. I also love After Effects and it's encoding capability. I can get MP4's out of AE that look almost lossless and are only 10-15 Mbps.
Where on earth did you even come up with such an idea as to try a method like that? Or was it out of a production book somewhere?
I noticed that if you step through the first few frames of any hacked GH1 clip, the bitrate and quality of the first frame is significantly lower and then sharpens within a few frames. This gave me the idea that a low initial bitrate may somehow stabilize the recording, so covering the lens and thereby creating a very simple frame, could help. Seems to work well. I could be completely wrong and there could be a different reason that the cover-the-lens workflow works, but the fact remains that it worked for me!

I'm trying to understand the difference between this patch (100 Mbps Max Latitude) and the Blackout-Powell patch. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if my plans are to shoot in AVCHD mode 1080p at 24 fps and I want to achieve the best latitude possible at average bitrates the 100 Mbps Max Latitude patch is the better of the two; however, if I want to shoot in the same mode, AVCHD mode 1080p at 24 fps and I don't care about latitude only achieve the highest detail or average bitrate possible then the Blackout-Powell patch is the better choice, right?
In the future please only post the same message in one thread at a time. However, for both of those purposes, I'd use Max Latitude. In my opinion, Max Latitude is best for 1080p24 if you don't mind sacrificing 720p60 for 720p30. Blackout-Powell is the best if you want to retain the slow motion capability of 60 fps SH mode.

I hacked my GH1 (latest firmware) with the Blackout-Powell patch. When I record in SH mode, the video is smooth. When I switch to FHD mode, the video is very jerky/choppy. I must have missed something. Can someone help me to identify the problem?

You may simply be seeing the difference between 60fps and 24fps. Try recording at a lower shutter speed, preferably 50, when you're in FHD, as that will make motion appear more fluid. Never go below 60 in SH mode.

I continuously shoot on a card until its full, then format it. I believe this would also prevent fragmentation. I can go several shoots or weeks between formating without a problem; I just copy the clips onto my computer after the shoot and then leave them on the card. This is also a helpful built-in backup system in case you delete the files on your computer accidentally, but they were recent enough to still be on the card. That being said, if I'm going to a very important shoot, or on vacation or something where I will be needing as much card space as possible, I format all my cards first.
Yes, it works. I installed it yesterday on a GH17. It made 24p/progressive files and higher bitrate.
