Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch - GH1 FTW!!!

Latest rough cut of a music video.

This was not as fancy pants as my nice black and white shoot I had zero prep time. Basically the client had X amount of cash and bunch of models and clothes standing around for the day that he had paid for in his empty facing nyc penthouse.. So this music video was made with NO planning whatsoever.... literally just made it up on the spot and came up with this fall asleep fantasy idea... it's kind of a prince get off meets moulin rouge orgy look. It's amazing what one can do with a

a> couple cheap blink multi colored lights
b> a smoke machine
c> colored gels and

Please don't pay attention to the video after 4 or so minutes I rendered the whole thing out but really I only got up to about 4 and a half minutes the last few minutes are a mess... then end will also loop back to where she is seeing herself mixing the video on the screen so it's a loop in a loop dream sort of thing.

It's currently processing the 1080p version so give it some time if it's still up in 720p. Vimeo is annoying with that I wish they would just let you set that you want ALL your videos in 1080p automatically.

Full HD, 1920 1080p... 24p.... really low light except for the black and white outdoor tracking shot which I am particularly fond of.. best shot in the vid with amazing deatail

Very nice quality Blackout! I know you're still editing this but just a couple of comments (take em or leave em!):

- Overall very high production value
- NYC shot is really dramatic
- My initial thought is that opening car scene brings down the overall production value, mainly due to the car move and pan that isn't exactly smooth. You could try speed ramping that section to mask the pan a little, using fast and slo mo (but might need a music track to match it I suppose?). I actually think you could move this clip to the end just before he walks into the studio, but it works now
- I feel like the very beginning doesn't flow. This is only my opinion... it may be as intended. I might try starting with the NYC scene, instead of the thunder, use the beat track as if coming through headphones (softer), so you are setting the stage with a contrast with the big city and a small music track... then cut to the girl in the studio... just an idea
- Might be nice to keep the soft music track during this initial studio scene
- The initial scene in the studio drags just a little -- could be a little tighter?
- Maybe could work backwards from full music volume in timeline, and keep the track playing before that at the "headphone volume".
- The ending seems to hang to long on the monitor shot, that isn't a strong ending IMO

Just some constructive feedback (I hope). Nice video overall!

Yeah I am in vibe with some of your critiques, thanks, I am playing around with a few tweaks and alternate versions.... I didn't like that car move either... it was a rushed rushed thing and he didn't hit the mark and so I panned..... literally that was the last shot before the car had to go back... only usable one and they want it in. This was a really rushed shoot they are learning planning is better but they are learning the hard way... but - this is leagues past what they had been doing before so they are very happy with it so far.

I am doing some work on the front scenes to make a lightning bolt or something maybe come down and then make it seem stormy...throw a layer or mask or something in there,,, but I might pull it... they want that shot of nyc.. I also haver some nice b-roll on the roof that I am playing with where to fit it, and I def agree on the ending that is not it I just let it render out that will be tightened up quite a bit... might tighten up the first sequence too..

Oh editing... so many choices it makes my brain itch...

I've been having some 720p60 write errors with this patch - is this to be expected, since the patch is designed for 1080p24?

Is your cam locking and what card are you using?

I'm not sure what you mean by locking, precisely. The camera shows a write speed error for a few seconds, but does allow me to record after a bit, and starts responding again, so no, it's not locking in that way. I'm using 32GB Transcend class 10 cards.

OK, I'm really sorry, but on 25pNative (PAL) this patch causes 'too fast' write errors for my Sandisk 30 MB/s Class 10 cards, when I video an aquarium at 1920x1080 FHD and 1/50 shutter speed.
Have you actually tested it on a PAL model?

How do I find out the maximum possible write speed of my SD card and the appropriate maximum I can shoot FHD at? I mean I keep lowering the FHD bitrate, but it keeps giving me the Write error..

If a GH1 says that the currently loaded Version is 1.0A:0000, is this straight from the factory firmware? Or has it been hacked?

The clips created with the BP24pN patch (PAL) are supposed to be none field dominance clips, aren´t they? FCP7 keeps saying they are upper (odd) clips. Is that correct?

Hello Blackout,

Could I use this hack on my GF1? I am looking for a hack which provides good qulity 1080p video on GF1 without having errors.
I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks and regards,

Theoretically if FCP treated them as interlaced upper field dominant, it would not mess up the footage, but that's not technically correct, as this patch should create completely progressive clips. Change the field dominance/field motion properties of the clips to Progressive.

To my knowledge (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the GF1's sensor is only capable of 720p video output, not 1080p.

Sorry, the Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch works properly only on NTSC and PAL GH1 cameras. The GF1 lacks the FHD mode required for Native 24p video recording.

May I ask what FHD stands for? Does it mean that the GF1 is and will not be able to record videos in 1080p? I thought the sensor of the GH1 and GF1 has the same resolution and is almost the same but I might be mistaken since as I heard the GH1 shots nicer photos than the GF1.

FHD stands for "Full HD", a marketing term for 1080p video resolution. In addition to the GF1's SH (720p) video mode, the GH1 offers FHD (1080p) video mode at 24fps. The GF1 lacks the ability to record video in FHD 1080p mode.

Thanks a lot for the explanation. May I ask why the GF1 lacks this ability? Is that software or hardware related?

Edit: just noticed that I still get card write errors every now and then even I use GOP = 15.

I got similar errors with Transcend 16GB class 10 cards. Somebody suggested to change GOP size to 15, I did, and I don't get any more those errors.

The price is so low now man jutst pick up a hackable used GH1 or GH2... don't fiddle faddle with the GF1.

Hello,
The problem is that I already have my GF1 and also the GH1 and GH2 is still too expensive and too big for me. I like the GF1 for its size and quality.
If no 1080p video recording is possible then I can live with that since I am not a big video recorder. I am just using it to recored videos about the kids while we are on vacation or during family gatherings.

Thanks for your help.
