64 gb P2 Card

The cycles would be about the same... the 40 cycles thing is (no disrespect) ridiculous.

I love the size and feel of P2s... I can't wait till there are 64's on the market for what we now pay for 16's... that's a good place to be. Nothing will shake a stick at them.

I think P2 cards are a heck of a buy.

i have to agree. every P2 card i buy pays for itself in a matter of days (or hours). i have NEVER felt quite as confident with any other recording media...

Hi guys,

While I could not say exactly what the read write number is on CF cards, there is a read write number on all memory. And it looks at when the card is full and then emptied. So if you are typically only recording half a card, and the read write limit was 40, it would feel like 80 because it looks at filling the card for a complete cycle. On the P2 card it is 100,000 cycles, so pretty much it will be a big surprise when it finally gives up the ghost and won't record anymore.

I tend to look at the price of the card on a per usage basis. If you reocrd only once and put it on the shelf, that is pretty expensive. If on the other hand you record 100 times ona card that costs $900, that card is now $9, record 1000 times and it is $.90. And because it is equipment it can be included in the lease package.

All the best,

Jan

Jan, can you tell us straight up if you think that the 40 cycles number is anywhere close to possibly accurate?

No, it's not. Lexar just told me that their professional 8GB CF card is good for 1,000,000 read write cycles. I see others stating that they are good for 2 million read write cycles.

I think the misinformation here is coming from the fact that many CF cards have a transfer rate of 40 megabytes/sec. Maybe that is where the 40 number is coming from?

Wooow, 2 million cycles. They are probably just saying that knowing it will never be reached knowing everyone upgrades thier CF cards every year or two but 2 million cycles, thats freakin' amazing! Thats probably the silicones endurance inside the CF card, I'll bet the connectors wear out way before that.

Glad you can pay for your cards so fast.

For some of us who produce DOC's and fund our own projects we don't have the ability to get jobs and pay for them the week we get them. I'm amazed that it costs $6k + to fill up a hpx 500 with 32gig cards (more than my hvx 200 cost), for some of us, that would pay for 3 months in Costa Rica, 3-6 months in Africa or even a year in some third world countrys shooting.

I do really like P2, just not the expense. And no, frame drops from tape aren't even an option in these climates.

That really makes no sense AT ALL... and frankly Jan, you know better. I know that you prefaced your post with "I could not say exactly" that only makes it even more misleading... There is no solid state memory out there that would only survive 40 cycles.

I say this with all due respect Jan, you know we l-o-v-e what you do for us here. But that post sounds a bit like a political campaign for the presidency. I personally think you should clarify your beliefs... just so that nobody out there assumes that CF cards might not last them beyond a month which is ridiculous. I am sure you didn't mean to mislead, but people can take what someone like you says for granted and there is no way you accept the 40 cycles thing with the wealth of knowledge you've accumulated while working with us and the development team over at Panny making cameras like the DVX, HVX, HPX, and more importantly P2 technology...

Guys to be clear - she never said it was 40 cycles for CF cards - that claim came from this post on the previous page:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1441032&postcount=76

Jan was only stating the read/write cycles are generally calculated in regards to writing a FULL card -
so she used the example that IF it were in fact 40, and you only filled the card halfway each time,
then the true life cycle would be 80 (as an example).

Go back and read her post:

Let's not jump the gun on every statement she makes, please.

How do they get to a 100000 read/write cycles. 32GB at 16min write and 16min read is basically 32min per single read /write, right? lol
That would take like 2200 + days to continuous read/write, right? 6years read/write, right? ????
My head hurts.........it don't fail, P2, bottom line.thank you

I have been hearing $2,200.00 to $2,800.00, not $3,500.00. No official word yet though so who knows what it will be? That price would be right if you just multiplied 4x 16GB card prices.

Let's hope it will be significantly less.

Dan
