64 gb P2 Card

fwiw... cameralover is entitled to his opinion; even if it isn't shared by many here. At least he didn't call anyone a 'goober'...

Hmm, I simply posted the current prices of media as I was about to make an online purchase from tapeonline. It's not really even an opinion. And you are almost making it sound like I am here trying to insult people. That's not really fair at all.

The first manufacturer to make a camera that record's to high speed CF cards will win the game! No more chasing spec standards!

I think you are right. Curious to see Scarlet's new specs. !

Sandisk's new 16 GB CF cards have a 45 mB/s speed (i'm not exactly sure what that number represents) and are going to retail for $400...

Just for the record, I think the P2 card is a clever invention. I personally have been waiting for the 64GB to come out to finally jump into the P2 bandwagon. The problem I see and probably the reason why many are upset is that last year (January 26, 2007) at the Editor's Lounge sponsored by Alpha Dogs in Burbank CA, Panasonic made several announcements in their product presentation. One of the things that was mentioned, is that by year's end (2007) the 32GB P2 card would be available for about $1,000. If anyone is interested, this information was posted on Studiodaily.com (go to the video archive). Unfortunately the longer version of the presentation is no available anymore (the one with the Panasonic rep talking about the estimated times and prices for the higher capacity cards). Still, you can find a cribsheet of some of the things mentioned in the presentation. I know is not the same as seeing and hearing the actual rep spreading the news in his own words. But for some mysterious reason that part of the presentation was edited out after being available for a while. I think that Panasonic is going to double the P2 card capacity while maintaining the same price strategy; so the new 64GB card is going to be about $1,650 and the 32GB $900 (current MSRP prices for the 32GB and 16GB respectively).

Hmmm... Actually, I was trying to show some support for your posts. Sorry if it came across otherwise.

Sony or Panny could hedge the market while keeping 2 SxS / P2 slots while adding at least 1 CF card slot.

Buy the time it's on the market CF cards will be sooo fast, heck, I can shoot 4k to them now.

Peace!

64gig cards will be swell (I'll probably buy some about the time the 128's come out and the price drops on them). My HPX-170 came with a 16 . . . added to the two I already have that gives me about 2 hours at 720pn (which represents most of what I shoot), and that's if I don't upload and clear any of them to my laptop (or external drive) along the way . . .

Looking back to when I used to have to flip 3 four gig cards (in the "old" days) I feel like I'm in heaven . . . comparitively speaking.

Years end for the 64GB or the 128GB?

I know the 64's are coming out in Nov. so I'm assuming that's what you were referring to.

Since Panasonic is really just trying to make money (as all businesses are), I wonder if it would be more profitable for them to sell their cards for much cheaper and pull in more customers. I personally won't buy P2 cards until they reach higher capacities at much lower prices. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way.

I think P2 cards are a heck of a buy. they tough, reliable, did I forget to say reliable? and over the years that I have used them i've only destroyed 1 by having it fall in the ocean with me and a camera.

You can record red camera to CF cards but they Red advises to limit read/ write uses to 40 cycles or so I hear. No such limit with P2.

Also the P2 card can be used in a 170 a 500, 2000, 2700 , or 3000 a wide range of cameras as compared to SxS.

do u know what it is?

I seem to remember Jan saying it was 100,000. Which is 2,500 times more than 40...so:

If you were to use a 16gb P2 card for 100,000 write cycles until it died, you would still only pay ~$820.

But if you bought the equivalent amount of 16gb Compact Flash cards (at ~$35 each) with the 40 cycle restrictions... you'd pay $87,500.

Not really in the same ballpark...

Where are you hearing 40 cycles from a CF card for a RED?

I have over 1,000 cycles from 1 CF card and know people who have WAY more than that.

Do you really believe you can only cycle a CF card 40 times and it's no good? Ha!
