64 gb P2 Card

Why do you conclude that the price is absurd?

Based upon what criteria?

They are expensive to be certain, but without some foundation for calling the price "absurd," I don't understand how you can conclude that.

p2 card capacities are now four times larger for the same price than less than three years ago.

The only relevant comparison product is SxS HDDs from Sony. Those are about 3% less expensive the p2 cards.

SC tried for years to create a p2 based HDD, and finally abandoned the products.

I'm not an engineer, and I wish the prices were cheaper, but in comparing SxS and p2 indicates the prices are what they are.

We all know that Jan frequents the board. We all know that people have been complaining about the pricing since day 1.

We also know that capacity has quadrupled for the same price.

You call that absurd; I call it a great improvement.

I can´t belive that it is so complicated.
If you have a P2 card, there must be a way to tap the signal from the card somewhere and route it to a hard disk.

But on the other hand, then you can buy a Firestore - there are even some frankensteined versions with exchangable disk.

I´m waiting on the Cienform Recorder, for me that would render all P2 obsolete.
Till then I´m happy with my Firestore.

Stay stuck on the message, not a specific word within it...

I got the message, but you chose the hyperbole.

Absurd is a pretty strong word and it's the one I responded to.

Expensive -- yes.

Absurdly expensive. Your words.

But you still haven't explained how you conclude that the cards are absurdly expensive.

For all the debate and going back and forth... The bottom line is no one said HD was going to be cheap. This is especially true considering the quality of video we are getting from all of the P2 cameras. If folks want cheap, inexpensive media... stick with tape... whether it's DV or HDV.

I wonder why solid state disks are so cheap

like: Transcend Solid-State Disk 2,5" 64 GB - they write with 22 MB/s for only 160 Euros.

Hey, 160 BUcks for 64 Gig sounds like a fair price inmy book and the speed would be enough for DVCProHD right?

Now we only need a P2 Adaper with controller and battery.

Anhar, I got a job for you!

SxS media seems to be coming down now in relation to P2. I just noticed tapeonline has 32GB SXS for $1450 while their 32GB P2 cards are $1615

Yes but say three years from now we perfect the means of an AVC-Intra codec that needs 400mbs to write it. The P2 card will do that because our read and write speed is 640mbs. 35mbs is pretty easy in comparison.

Best,

Jan

Sony doesn't have the best record in the world of developing then supporting formats/media. If you look at all of the pro formats they have introduced, then sort of discarded or ignored in the past few years, I would not be suprised to see new cameras for the SxS format trickle to a stop in the near future.

Panasonic's game plan for P2 seems to be a lot more long term.

I'm just going to delete my entire comment and gracefully back out of this bout superman.

Jan, have you guys ever considered Expresscard size p2 cards? so that it will fit in our macs and pcs? would make life a whole lot easier in a lot of ways..

you wouldn't have to change the slots on the cameras... you could just sell an adapter like this: http://www.duel-systemsadapters.com/?productid=DP-0002

what do you think?

Why would we do that? The PCMCIA Card works, works well frankly. Locks in, needs to be released not just pulled out or nudged. Has flexibility.

Don't realy see the need without too many sacrifices.

Jan

On top of which, chasing another manufacturers standard is just a losing game.
There would be more R&D involved in developing an Expresscard sized P2 card... and there is no guarantee or control for Panasonic on what Apple or any other manufacturer is going to put in their next gen systems. Who knows how long Apple or anyone else will be using Expresscard slots?

Switching form factors now would only drive up the cost with little added benefit other than perhaps a very short term convenience.

Just my 2 cents.

I think it's pretty clear that what annoys many people is that the lower capacity cards are no longer available, which makes the drop in price per gig seem irrelevant. I mean, if you can't afford $800 or so for a P2 card, you can't afford it...regardless of whether it's a 4gb or 64gb card.

If the lower capacity cards were still available, and people could buy 8GB cards (or even 4gb cards) for a few hundred dollars, we'd probably hear a lot less complaints about P2 card pricing.

Cards have definitely gotten significantly cheaper per gig - that is simply a fact.
They cost a fraction of what they cost initially... per gig.
But when the entry price point for P2 media stay the same even with a larger capacity, it doesn't really matter to those who may not have the cash to lay out.
Well said.

I've read the comments in this thread in support of P2 pricing and the general comments about how HD isn't cheap. I think what bothers many is the cost of P2 media compared to the cost of the camera itself (percentage-wise).

fwiw... cameralover is entitled to his opinion; even if it isn't shared by many here. At least he didn't call anyone a 'goober'...

"PCMCIA organization strongly encourages future product designs to utilize the ExpressCard interface." ExpressCard is the new format. 99% of all new laptops use it.. it's kind of like sticking with the big 5" floppy disk instead of going with the 3"... fact of the matter is the fastest way of tranferring a 32gb card is via the expressbus/pc card adapter cable (with it's crashes and unweldiness and all).. usb is too slow... and that's the way it's going to go especially as the cards get bigger... the laptop is the lynchpin in all this and Panasonic should try to keep up with computer technology... the sony sxs cards make sense to me... they have 32 gb cards don't they?

you can always lock the card in to that adapter...

Luis, I agree with all do respect...

The first manufacturer to make a camera that record's to high speed CF cards will win the game! No more chasing spec standards!

Moore's law will haunt manufacture's that force a fix'd standard upon other's...

I love shootin 4K to a Cf card...

I bought the last laptop from Micro Center yesterday that has a PCMCIA slot, it was a close out and I feel really lucky to own such a high tech antique... It also has an EC card slot, very rare anymore to have both... Not one laptop in thier new line that comes out in 90 days will have a pcmcia slot...

You can buy a tough book for like $3500.00 but you'd be a pussy if you did.

I agree Jan... I really love the feel build and I guess the size of P2 cause well the bigger the easier for you guys to cram in more memory at cheaper prices... ouch! I just mentioned the one thing I don't like about P2.... the price.... BUT, it sure is a great form factor, build... and the locking thing is pro all the way...

also I like how they are not too small... harder to misplace :D

Once we get to the 128GB and bigger mark at affordable prices it will be the preferred card of the guys that have to actually load the darn thing. hands down

I have to say that the non locking nature of EC/34 architecture is frustrating.

Try insert an EC/34 eSATA card, and then attaching the eSATA cable.

Don't try this after drinking heavily.
