GH4 V-log

Iso100 would be nice with V-log. GH4 has so noisy sensor. With current flat adjustments image breaks very easy even in iso200.

This is something I have wanted to address. My personal opinion is that the best results are with natural and cine v straight from the camera. Since the compression in GH4 is not high end the flat cine d that people often use breaks too easy and gets horrible artifacts etc...

Is it correct to assume that all those flat cine D settings are just hype and before V-log there is no point to do much grading except for little skin tone corrections etc?

Do you use sharpening, noise reduction, iDynamic, iresolution, shadows/highlights etc? If yes, turn them OFF. Set contrast to zero and shoot in 4k or UHD. The picture should be perfectly fine. ;)

Grading makes sense everytime. The GH4 is just a bit harder to grade than cameras with a real log mode like the Samsung NX1 today. ;)

January release.. Lets not hope that'll be the 31th :-) Can't wait either!
Oh wow. Thank you for the info. I hope it's from a reliable source :)
On a side note, it looks like Samsung NX1 is getting a massive firmware update including log type D gamma preset also. It is getting ridiculously difficult to choose between nx1, gh4, and a7s for video. Well, I am not in a hurry to decide, so I guess I'll wait for reviews of these logs.

One size does not fit all, so I would only shoot Cine-D when my subject matter has enough contrast to justify using it.

i.e. Shooting Cine-D on flat overcast days makes no sense at all, but in bright sun-lit locations or high contrast stage lighting it's a different story.

What is the point of cineD anyway. Natural contrast -5 is as flat but has much more normal colors. CineD has very weird skin tones.

All those sharpening, noide reduction I tend to leave at 0 settings. Unlike most people I´ve watched online leaving them at -5.
As for iDynamic and iResolution, those are ALWAYS OFF, everything that starts with a small i is usually for iDiots, such as iPod,iTunes etc..

But what do you personally prefer?
Natural right?

"With this firmware, time code and RSS(Recording Start/Stop) signal can be embedded to the HDMI output signal"

Does this mean that the new GH4 firmware with a Atomos Shogun could be used well for legal videography, where you want the timecode display burned in? So I could go out via HDMI to the Shogun as a pass through with onscreen timecode burned in, and then out from that to direct burn to a DVD to deliver on-site?

Nope, haven't seen any blog or news website post about it. I'm guessing it's gonna be the 31th after all :-)

But what do you personally prefer? Natural right?

I use the following profiles in order of decreasing profile contrast: CineV, Standard, Natural, CineD

With CineD I keep contrast at 0, with the other profiles I use -5 contrast. ( also I do not use the shadow/hilight controls with CineD )

Most of the time I'm shooting with either Standard or Natural, but occasionally I will use CineD for high contrast subjects and CineV for low contrast subjects.

Or even a Samsung NX1...
Indeed, i'm very interested in the Nx1. Better IQ, better AF, APS-C sensor (best format IMHO), Log profiles... And it seems that Samsung didn't take consumers for idiots like panasonic did with the Lx100 who has a better video quality than Gh4. The NX500 is limited to Quad HD compared to NX1.

Maybe Samsung's aggressive push into the space will provide Panasonic some additional sense of urgency? Competition's always good.
