GH4 V-log

Question is: At which point digital cameras can become what they should be - computers that run different software setups. Given the processing power and other technical requirements are there. BMC seems to work more and more this way. In the future - if they introduce new features - they could charge a bit of money for it. Would be okay with me.

Sony does this with the s2log upgrade on the FS700

Some new Samsung cameras, including the NX1, are labelled as "SMART" cameras, and run the Tizen (linux-based) general purpose operating system. I haven't been able to find any apps for the cameras yet, but it seems like it would be possible to create and install apps for them as long as Samsung allows it. Samsung does seem to be at the forefront of this new area, however, they don't seem to have it fully figured out yet or realize what a hit they would be if they fully supported this functionality.

We finally could turn a GH4 into an alarm clock, a calculator or a telephone via an app - maybe even the long expected espresso module as a software solution .... :-)

Understandably manufacturers may have second thoughts about it not to the least because questions like warranty would need to be solved if third party apps could run on a camera - apart from the question what app would make sense at all (does installation of Macig Lantern on a Canon collide with the warranty?). But if manufacturers themselves would introduce such enhancements - fine. Lets see what happens with the rumored v-log. Have my doubts it will really come but stay a happy customer for longer if it does.

The GH4 is my first camera entering the GH line of cameras. I come from the Nikon D800 where it lacked several video features that the GH4 excels in, but one BIG area....latitude and highlight falloff. With the Atomos Shogun, hopefully, days away from release, tapping into 10 bit 4:2:2 Pro Res acquisition will be quite powerful for this camera, but, man, the pink elephant will be the stunted lattitude. Come on Panasonic, we need you to push back from the A7s camp. You have the leg up with the 10 bit out the HDMI, now finish it with adding V-log to the GH4 to counter Sony's S-Log in the A7s. I'm really hoping you do this. You showed it fully functioning at INTERBEE. Thank you for making a kick ass camera in such a small and affordable package, now drive it home!

The harsh roll-off is killing some aspects of my project and forcing me to look at other systems. The glimpse and potential promise of V-log literally has kept me in the GH camp a while longer.

And that's why I come here: Yes, Headmaster!

@renegadewill Yeah, I've pretty much married a 1/4 black pro mist to the front of my 12-35 for this reason and to cut the "crispness" a bit. While diffusion doesn't help capture any more information as a V-Log profile _might_ (who knows if there is simply a limitation to the sensor...), it has helped create a bit more pleasing transition to the clipping. I'm also just bringing in more light even tho it hampers my mobility.

Working with what I have tho I would love to shoot some of these scenes with a D750 or a C100 to compare.
