Do I see a RED-DRIVE and the optical RAW port on the camera simultaneously?

How does one control the UI when there are goodies hooked to the back? Would they rely on the EVF at that point?

If you had to give a ballpark guess, what would you think the weight of a setup like that might be?
 
Very cool. I'm digging the cage more now (looks less lethal!). The rails look lighter, which is great. Any other angles available? Maybe some without the cage, and with the LCD open/attached?
 
What port does the mini-RAID connect via? The optical-RAW port? The SATA-esque port? Where on the body is that port?

Camera body only will come in under 6 pounds (we think). The heaviest piece will be the 720P EVF which uses real glass... don't have total yet. Still making modifications.

Mini-RAID connects to bottom of back panel... NOT the optical port. It cannot handle RAW, only REDCODE.

Those are somewhat independant of each other Brook, but all outputs are live, as long as they are in the capability of the record device.. so you should be able to record 24p 4k Redcode as a 4k "quick playback copy" (thats just insane to think about) to the Red Drive on the back, and also go out the fiber to your little fridge for max. lossless quality if need be.

Ok, that makes sense. I think I'm so used to seeing the blank cover on the left side of the camera that I expected something else to bolt into place when the flash and optical units aren't being used. This angle makes the camera look considerably thinner than the renders at the L.A. screening [understanding, of course, that the camera is thinner since then].

Also, seeing three geared rings on that lens got me really excited for a moment. Next time... more deep breaths.

Love the current design! I can tell with each new render that the changes are functional ones; it continues to look more refined as it develops.

I don't have any qualms about the aesthetics; I've always thought the style part was great. I am curious however, are you still considering a top handle of sorts? The camera looks like it will be highly usable in a handheld setting with the complete rail package, but I'm wondering what the plans are if it's not in "full battle regalia" mode. :) Since the top appears to be completely rounded/ribbed at this point, is there a spot for a handle to attach without the use of the RED CAGE or RED RAIL? I ask because it is likely that we won't all be able to purchase every accessory the camera has to offer right out the gate and obviously there needs to be some reasonable way to carry it.

I'm sure you have these kinds of things in mind; just wondering what the solutions are!

I notice that The battery can be cascaded as well ( max 2 battery packed together for longer continuous operations )

Where's the tally lamp ? RED light fashing during rolling !!!

If I'm not mistaken (though these things change all the time), you either connect the optical port unit or the onboard flash unit (perhaps what you thought was the "blank cover?") to the side of the camera (and it hasn't been announced if they both ship with the body - we just know it comes with 32 or 64 gigs of flash). I don't think there's a "dummy panel" you put on if you aren't using the optical or flash units (ie, if you're just using the mini-RAID).

Of course that begs the question, if both the flash unit and the mini-RAID are connected, how do you tell the camera which one to use/whether you want to use them both/etc. I think the GUI is going to have to have some pretty crazy menus/options given all of the different formats and media it can record - but knowing the RED team's standard of excellence, that's actually the thing I am still looking forward to the most! :)
 
Yes to top handle with or without cage. The cage and accessories will be available as individual pieces or as sets.

Jim, nice work. The design is really shaping up. One quick note... maybe you can make the fins have fillets at the bases so that its easier to clean... But otherwise I like!

Any chance you can show a picture with the EVF and/or LCD?

Not to be picky, but it looks like the handles on the left side might hit your head or block some of the view. But maybe I have the wrong sense of scale. Also, since you're designing the Red Rail, would you consider adding a vertical support rod (a la DVRig Pro) to help take some of the weight off the shoulder?
 
The weight is distributed much better (fore-aft) on the rail.
A support rod only makes sense if the rig is front heavy
