Scene settings

Comman guys. there is nothing magical about the scene file adjustments.. All they do is change color temperature, black level, etc.. the only thing that is significant are the gamma curves.. The other settings can all be perfected/tuned in your NLE, which I would much rather do anyways.. I mean why lock yourself down to a certain look where you can't change in post? Shoot neutral as possible and modify in post. I don't get the hype over the scene files.. I just took a look at the sample scene file settings for the HPX170 and was extremely underwhelmed at the variations.. I come from a DVX and they were just as useless on that camera..

Although I would normally agree with you to shoot clean and effect in post, I do think there is something to be gained from using scene files when you know what kind of look you are going for, and that is time saved. Even with todays fast computers it still takes rendering time to achieve the same look that we could from within the camera while in production.

I also feel that it is important for every camera operator to know their tool inside and out, and adjusting/using the scene settings is a great way to understand how each function can alter the recorded image. Just my two cents!

In this same thread, johnnyha says "I shot some footage in Scene file 6 (Cinelike D) with Master Ped all the way down to -50, in twilight, that looked GREAT...", what does he mean?

Then he says "I'm shooting at -20 Master Ped now".

What is 'Master Ped'?
What does it do?

Sorry for the questions, I'm new to this and want to get to know as much as I can.
Thanks.

It's master pedestal. It controls the starting point of the gamma curve. This will change the dark areas of the picture.

I can't wait until we can record the equivalent of RAW files for video and get away from 8-bit recorders so we can really play with these details in post. Maybe with AVC-Ultra...

Just discovered this playing around with the scene files from the HPX-170. On the HMC-150 if the Knee adjustment is grayed out (and defaulting to auto) you need to change the Gamma setting to something other than Cinelike. Once you have your Knee adjusted to your liking you can go back to Gamma and reset it to Cinelike if needed. The Knee will grey out once again but it should stay set with whatever you set it at. Not sure if the camera is still reading it when it is grayed out but some of the 170 scene files do require a Knee other than auto and a Cinelike gamma. This may have already been covered before but I thought I would pass it along just in case. Hope it helps.

Not quite. When the knee is grayed out, that means that it is not used at all. The cinelike gammas do not use the knee circuit. So no matter what you set it to, it will have no effect.

can someone explain what the knee's do? i don't quite understand....is it like setting compression levels for the white and black range? like limiting contrast?

Thanks for clarifying that Barry. I thought that might be the case. It does leave me a little confused though regarding the scene files from the HPX-170. There are certain scene files that specify a Cinelike gamma and a Knee other than auto. Most of the scene files do use an automatic Knee...but take the scene file titled "FILMIC" from the Panny website for instance, if the Knee is not used when set to a Cinelike gamma then why does the author of that scene file specify a low Knee? Is the grayed out Knee setting only applicable to the HMC-150 or does it apply to the 170 as well?

hello everyone.

i looked around for a collection of scene files, but didn't find a sub-forum or any previous posts. forgive me if i post this in the wrong place!

i took the hpx170 scene files from the panny site and edited them to match the hmc150 format.

for those that don't know, i'll try to explain how it works.

you can store/load 4 'scene' files on the camera.
each 'scene' file contains 6 presets corresponding to 'F1, F3, etc'.
so what you can do is create 4 different 'scene' files or groups of presets and load them as needed.

i plan to create a scene file for each type of job/shoot/project, eg, wedding or ENG news report. you have to name the scene files 'SCENE1.txt' and 'SCENE2.txt', but the presets can be whatever 6 digit name you want.

i'm attaching a 'SCENE1.txt' to show the format you need to follow when creating your own custom groups of presets.

simply copy the values from one of the looks you want and paste into 'SCENE1.txt' so that you have 6 presets (F1-F6). copy everything AFTER "<F1>". then 'save as' 'SCENE2.txt' or 3 or 4 to create your 4 files of grouped presets.

the 'SCENE1.txt' is slightly modded from the default, i changed F1 to the 'vivid' look from panny.

i hope this helps!
Hi averan,

Did you created the scene file for each type of job/shoot/project???

Thanks

no. still haven't gotten around to that! =(

i've settled on using a modified Cine-V scene file for pretty much everything.

i hope to eventually create those project-related groups some day...

How do i load these settings into my camera? I`m having trouble cant figure it out.

i know this question has been answered many times in this forum....
i haven't loaded any in a while, but it basically goes like this:

save your scene file sets onto the card (i don't remember into which folder)
go into scene file settings on your camera
select load from one of the options
choose the set you want to load into the camera's memory (F1-6 on the scene dial)

you can only load one set of 6 scenes at a time, so organize your sets/groups in a way that makes sense.

you'll have to search the forums, read the manual, and/or fiddle with it on the camera to figure it out, sorry.

Is there any way to translate the HPX and HMC master ped values for the DVX and vice versa? I have a scene file I'd like to try out but I'm having a hard time finding the right setting.

i may be missing something... but why are there so many "8s" and such in these scene files? the camera reads from "-7" to "+7." HELP!

What is this?

What is this?

Is this something that you can just imput into the camera?

Here you are, this is what the text file looks like
