close up resolution with Leica Dicomar

Hello all,

I am brand new here and in fact, new to HD. Has anyone had experience with "macro" style shooting? Like life-size (1:1 imaging), shooting insects or postage stamps for detail? I am interested in the HVX200 but with no ability to swap to a precision macro lens, I have doubts about resolution. I am assuming that removing the lens is impractical if not impossible.

Thanks much

If you are concerned about resolution, you need to be looking at a lense starting at $19,000.00 and a camera with 2/3" CCD's.
Anything less then that and your spending too much time splitting hairs my freind.

I read too many idiots making huge claims about issues that aren't worth making claims about. :thumbdown
Once you understand the technology you'll be able to sort through people's hype and make better decisions.

How much do you have to spend? Let's take it from there.
I'm sure the experts here can get you going in the right direction.

You don't need to spend that kind of money, you can get a decent diopter for much less. DVXUser member funkycoldg posted a video some time ago (now pulled, unfortunately) with a Century Optics diopter that looked pretty good -- I would try sending him a PM.

Thanks, THoff for the CONSTRUCTIVE reply. I did PM funkycoldg and I will post the results. Cuz frankly, I ain't got the $19,000.

You'll be more than OK with this Tiffen 77mm Close-up Kit (+1,+2,+4) Lens at $104.50... Just add a 77-82mm Step-Up Ring!

My 2cents!

I sense that you took my reply harshly. I apologize for that.

I don't personally know anyone who after bragging about the ability of their camera to change lenses has done so, ever. (I'm sure some do). Most just don't have the money to spend more on the lens then the camera and it doesn't make sense if you're only spending 3-5K on the camera anyways. That was the point I INTENDED to make.

The lens on the HVX is more then decent for a sub 10K camera, IMHO, as well as thousands of others.

Sorry if I came off sarcastic. I'll take the hit.

The best thing anyone can and should do is get a decent demo and try the camera/lens in a way you would regularly use it.
I got my camera for over a week before commiting to it. That was the best way of sorting opinions and facts.
I wish you well, and welcome to the forum.

No problem, TedRR.

I got feedback from funkycoldg recommending Century Optics 2.0 diopter, so now I have two options for macro work. Can anybody comment from experience (I will accept conjecture :Drogar-Dum(DBG): ) on which is better . . . ? Or is the Century way expensive?

Thanks for helping a newbie

I just purchased the Tiffen 72mm (direct fit to DVX 100) macro set (+1,+2,+4) off of eBay for $20 - used, but I couldn't tell it. Came with original leather case and original box. There were two sets for sale at the time I looked. Also just got the Tiffen 72mm .9 ND for $25

You can get Tiffen (and other high quality filters such as B+W) on eBay if you are not in a rush. But make sure you benchmark against the prices at B&H. (I never pay more than 60-70% of B&H - often much less - the Tiffen macros were 19%)

As an aside, previously I also got a Rode shotgun, both Lowel and NRG (portable belt-pack) lighting gear, Avenger lightstands and M-Audio MX-5a speakers (for $188 new - $399 list) at substantial discounts - all from eBay.

You have to know how to bid and not get "auction fever" (in other words, know when to walk away) but you can get a lot of name brands in good condition on eBay. In over 50 transactions, I've never been burned.

Good Article on Macro lens - Tiffen, etc.

Good Article on Macro lens - Tiffen, etc.

This article is pretty good on the use of macro lens - for still photography (the base camera was a Canon Power Shot A95) , but good insights for their use

the table below is helpful if you have the Tiffen Macros
