S1H new price

As of now the rumors haven't changed and it's supposed to be 6099 euros and $5999 US dollars here...

Yes, kind of disappointing but expected. $6,000 is a little too much for me. I was hoping the R3 would be the more video friendly tool that the R5 might fall short on. But I am kidding myself to think Canon is going to go there. :) It probably won't even have a full sized HDMI. At $5,000 with the right features it could be on my list but we will see Tuesday.

Yes, the R1 is probably going to be close to $8,000.

If R1 is more photo oriented with a high megapixel count, then it might slide into the A7RIV category. Of course, then it'd fall below below R3 in price and will no longer be a flagship.

It'd make more sense for R3 to track with A9 series and with R1 along with A1. The top consumer/pro stills model is, in my opinion, Fujifilm GFX100S and it sells for $6,000. A1 has 8K video at $500 higher but trails Fuji's medium format on stills resolution. Canon could naturally make a lot of headway in that category if it gets R1 into 100's MPX. When one can get 108 MPX already in a smartphone, that ought to be more than doable.

On a side note, you catch the season opener on Thursday? I was waiting for you to write anything negative about it so I can jump all over it. lol

The R3 and R1 are both a crappy form factor for video IMO

They're not that different from C70 ... which also has a crappy form. But it is what it is.

WRT pricing, a $6,000 R3 and a $8,000 (let's presume R1 is priced than R3) takes Canon above the market. They might believe that R3 is a 1 DX line replacement and thus perfectly suitable for the pros as the replacement but, IMO, the market has shrunk sufficiently and now Sony has similar performance cameras in the similar price ranges, whereas up until A9 and A1, it was a two horse race between Canon and Nikon. And then there's D9, rumored to be announced officially and/or released before the end of the year too. Which will have 8K. The high end field is a narrow niche and it looks a tad too crowded on top of that.

Naturally, if Canon goes high (R3), Sony will go middle (A7IV). And then this becomes like a game of chess - whoever controls the middle, controls the entire board. Prestige is nice to have but the photo-video money is in $1,500-$3,000 range. It's the Camry and the Accord that keep you in business, not the Bentley and the Rolls Royce.

I can see Canon slowly lowering prices for R5 (with the new R5c coming out in the near future) and R6 (if the new A7IV beats it on specs). Otherwise, gaps between models appear too large.

They did the opposite and recently, and quietly, increased the 5-year-old 5D Mark IV's price by $200.

Off specs, A1 seems like a superior value - a higher res sensor and 8K.

PS. Problems with production may explain a price hike on the already existing bodies. It's certainly been like this in the used car market.

For the most part technically speaking there are a ton of viable cameras out there from 1k-4K they all have doable color iso performance and codecs for most things. What will set a camera apart is the user experience-better EVF, Ibis, ergonomics, time code. I’ll pay top price not for more resolution, better high ISO but for those above mentioned aspects.

That might not happen on the "consumer/prosumer" cameras ever. It may become a staple on the videocentric gear but R3 and A1 are true hybrids, masters of most but not all trades.

Well, it is $5,999. Video 6K 60p Raw, 4K 120 FPS, Log3.

It looks an odd combination that's good for video, OK for stills, bad for the wallet.

It's a stopgap cam.

Make up some money that was potentially lost during 2020 (even though they supposedly did better than expected because of the R5 and other products).

Why not just buy R5 then? Way "cheaper", has higher res and 8K video (including 8K Raw).

A few weeks ago, I was sitting on my balcony during a thunderstorm and thought, "It'd be nice to film it ... but you don't know where it's going to show up or when. With R5, you'd just put on a wide lens, hit record and extract the 8K frames".

Yeah, I know, I agree - but people seem like they don't stop buying cameras.

I myself bought too many cameras in 2020 and they were just for fun.

A complete waste of money...but it's a hobby (and I don't mean only the cameras but buying stuff is a hobby).

Off the early previews of the preproduction samples - R3 has a very narrow appeal. If the eye control works well, it'll be a boon to the top end sports, action and BiF photographers. Its video wasn't quite ready - no Raw 6K yet - but R5 beats it on specs and price and A1 on specs. It's an odd camera,

Just watched a DPReview overview video of the R3 and saw the micro HDMI port. Boo! Come on Canon. I guess I saved some money so it is not all bad :)

You are correct! Obviously I am not in dire need or I would have purchased something a while ago. Luckily, I can wait for the A7IV and the GH6. After those two show their stripes I promise I will buy something... :) On a serious note, I find myself not doing as much professional photography these days, so my 'many birds with one stone' desire had abated.
