Official NextFest Thread

Maybe to add to the log line, a certain prop or a certain line of dialog must be used somewhere in the film. Incorporating that into the fest may be neat because we cam see how everyone used the same thing in a different way.

I think, if we went this route, the logline would be enough to show the film has been made for this fest.

Horror is fun to do, but it's also fairly easy. If it wasn't, you wouldn't see 60 different types of horror movies on the New Releases section at Blockbuster.

I'd rather have a fest that required just as much thought as it did execution. Or at least a different direction or genre to try. In order to really gain knowledge of the force, you must study ALL of its aspects... wait, now I'm going off on a tangent....
heheh, think horror is easy?

(No it's not a rickroll)

there are so many horror flicks in blockbuster because it is such a profitable almost sure fire genre in terms of sales / rentals and because the fans are starved for it and sometimes even like mocking the bad ones (it's so bad it's good) that the absolute lowest standard may be lower than some other genres. If the box is good and the premise is horror-y enough that may be enough for a rental since horror fans have seen everything and comb the aisles for their next fix.

but that does not mean it is easy to make a GOOD horror movie, if that's your argument, and that it takes no thought, then lets see you go out and make The Shining, or Hellraiser, or Devil's Rejects, or Altered States, or Carrie, or Eyes Without a Face (a personal fave), or Susperia, or The Thing, or Dawn of the Dead, or Night the Living Dead (social commentary), or Shaun of the Dead, or an American Werewolf in London, or Poltergeist, or Jaws, or Rosemary's Baby, or The Exorcist, or Dr. Caligari, or Nosferatu, or capture the classical romance of the original Dracula, Frankenstein, Hunchback, and Wolfman pics.

... all are horror movies that have a little more going on than thoughtlessness. I intentionally left off Friday the 13th, Freddy, and Halloween because that might fall into your definition of mindless horror even though Halloween has Hitchcockian levels of suspense - it's only it's typical teen setting that makes it seem of the same ilk as Friday the 13th or Nightmare on a cursory glance.

I think there were plenty of Horrorfest Movies last year that were far from "thoughtless", and whatever the genre, while no one would set out to make a bad movie in terms of execution, you can make any genre as dumb or as smart as you are capable of.

I would go with the Trailer Fest, because they are also short like the Ads, so they are easy to watch. And they are not limited so much, people can be very creative and they are not tied down to make a whole short film. That might increase the quality of the production.

I like that idea- that would be great- to create a great trailer for a non exsistent movie. The enteries would be easy to watch, and keeps the options wide open- nice sugestion. :)

I hate throwing my two cents in for what fest is up next and going through all of that trouble just to not be able to enter. Totally kills the spirit.
Too bad everyone doesn't feel that way. It seems everytime we have a new fest we have the "usual suspects" telling us how great their movies are going to be, only end up not competing. If you're not going to compete, who cares what you think the next fest should be. Therefore, I'll make no suggestions...

If we went the "One Logline" route, we could have people submit loglines. Then a preselected jury of our peers could whittle the submissions down to the top 5 or 10 and then we could have a public vote for the favorite.

Then that one would Be the one used for the LogLineFest.

Just an idea :)

Halloween fest (or the like) seems a bit generic to me...

But, it does kinda feel right. Kinda' go back to the roots of the dvxuser film fests a bit.... It is the perfect time to do it...

So long as it's got some kind of twist to it, in terms of the guidelines.

Barry_S supplies the logline, and the film has to take place on Halloween Day/Night. And, it has to be apparent in the film that it is indeed Halloween.... Something like that maybe... That'd be cool to me.

I think that is over complicating something. I see nothing wrong with simply saying "make a film that takes place on Oct 31st, any genre, any subject, but just tie in Halloween however you can"

It's like using a name for the Spyfest thing or whatever... it opens up some previous restrictions and allows people to follow through with whatever genre they personally are interested in.

I think we are kinda saying the same thing...

Having it take place on Halloween day, is the 'name' restriction ala spy fest, and drama fest. But then (for me) a logline, or whatever else, is the 'theme', if you will....

Though I do like the simplicity of "Your film takes place on Halloween. Go"

Lends itself towards the horror, zombie, etc. But, doesn't make it a requirement.

You could have a first date on Halloween... in fact, I have had a couple of first dates on Halloween and while some were most certainly horror filled, some could be considered... nevermind

Cast Away could take place on Halloween
House of 1000 Corpses could take place on Halloween
The Untouchables could take place on Halloween
Rear Window could take place on Halloween
Citizen Kane could take place on Halloween

I'm going to stop now...

I think we're both talking the same language

Want to hear something totally out there?

CVS FEST: Everyone shoots a short film with a CVS disposable camcorder.

I have one these things, modded for true 24fps, 640x480.

You could do crazy things like tie it to an airplane, plastic baggie under water, bike mount. Fun Stuff :)

probably more suited for a local thing, but I've always wanted to do it. Level the playing field!

Well I am more interested in hearing how you modded it for true 24P than I am for using it as a sole camera for a short I will put 2 months of my life and money into, unless the story just screamed for that as the absolute best medium ...

... but I do want to hear about this mod so I could integrate it into some project maybe ... gotta a link? If not please start a thread in the DIY section and tell us how to achieve this cool hack ... thanks

Combine Loglines with the Horror Fest idea, narrows down the broadness of the genre a little and 2 good ideas get thrown into one.
