Official NextFest Thread

Well, I have a suggestion, not something I like to do, but I think that in this forum, this would absolutely be fitting.

Fright Fest - short films WITHOUT dialogue

Who can scare us the most without saying a single word...

Would crying, screaming or moaning count?

Western just too see Cinealma's entry. If that's what it takes, ha, I'll vote for it.

Just curious, would anyone be offended if an entry was entirely CG? Not that it can be done in 3 months. For example a cartoony type deal?

The reason is, I almost had one ready for Adfest, not intended but long story.
I can see alot of pros and cons on either side and am fine either way.
Maybe this is a different thread, or a dead in the water deal? I don't know.

Barry_S or Larry_R would be the final word on that....

but, I would say, since the fests are open to any camera now, I would assume that could also mean no camera. But, that's my take. Like I said, Barry or Larry would be the final word.... And, it will also depend on the rules/guidelines for the next fest....

Well I would say in refernence to 3D...no camera, 3D is still completely camera based. Even down to the aperature settings, lens size, focal point, lighting and so forth. We still use a camera. Although everything is simulated in sofware.

Anyways, maybe if the CG entries were up for different prizes and different categories that would take the edge off the physical filmakers. As in Best Film/Video, Best CG Film/Video or something. A different category I guess.
Anyways, thinking out loud here.

I like JDS's idea of Poe fest (or expand it to short story fest) where people adapt stories for their movie. It would show a different facet of how people use their talent.

How about "Dollar Baby Fest". Stephen King used to let people like Frank Darabont (back when he was a film student) make short films from his short stories for a dollar. (King retained the rights, of course)

I wonder if he's still as generous these days.

I'm with you there Elton. I'll start casting for Roland and Eddie right now!

The main reason I suggested Poe was the fact that it is public domain.
Maybe a Poe / Lovecraft fest?
Anyway, I was just concerned about logistics and people playing dumb when they showed up on the upload day saying they thought it was OK to use a Dean Koontz story because it was "just for the internet"

As a SIDE NOTE ...

You know any one of us could make our own
"THE THING"
movie (short or feature) because the original story is in the public domain.

I hear ya, JDS. I know the Dollar Baby idea is a pipe dream, but just the same, I've heard of Stephen King adaptation fests.

Love the idea of The Thing, however. :) I could imagine all sorts of takes on it.

...and what about more conceptual fests, rather than genre-specific?

I like the idea of DreamFest, where participants are allowed to go any direction they choose but the theme should be about dreams and their effects/consequences.

This isn't to do the old cliche' "it was all a dream" sort of thing...but I like the idea of pursing more abstract interpretations of a theme.

I think this is a fabulous idea

Poe Fest / Lovecraft Fest

YES YES YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BArry S ? !

Well supposedly the originnal source material, i,e, the novella,
"Who Goes There" by John Campbell
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Goes_There?
which a radio show was based on in the 30's I think then a movie "The Thing" in the 50's, and then Carpenter's "The Thing", but it appears that Campbell's novella is up for grabs:

though I'm not sure why since it was published in the late 30's. Seems like that shouldn't be old enough
