Kick-Ass

Because one is clearly designed TO BE MORALLY REPULSIVE!!! That was the point! And it is. In Kick-Ass, it's supposed to be cool and exciting. I don't find it cool...or exciting. You're looking at it outside the context of the movie. I'm not.
I think you are the one who's looking at it outside the context of the movie.

Maybe it's is meant to repulse us in a violent manner. Maybe that's the point!

Have you seen it?

MAH

It's the tone he's finding objectionable. The Exorcist was serious as a heart attack, and its moral stance was about as clear as you can get. With Kick-Ass, he just felt the film was a celebration of the little girl's violent acts and that it wasn't effective as satire.

Look, I'm not a prude when it comes to violence. I can enjoy some mindless carnage like the next guy, just like I have enjoyed some pornography in my day...but I don't have an interest in watching pornography involving 11 year olds.
Except there's no pornography in Kick-Ass whatsoever at all.
Hit Girl is violent and foulmouthed, but not sexy.

But isn't a trailer supposed to get you to want to see the movie, by showing you parts of the movie? I've seen parts. I'm not excited to see it. And for other reasons beside the Hit Girl character, mainly because I haven't liked any of Matthew Vaughn's films yet.
And as I said, if it's not your cup of tea then that's cool.

Just don't tell me what I should think of it when you haven't seen it. The pornography comments are not needed, you have no idea what message the film is trying to portray by a teaser.

Either way, I'll judge it for myself before comparing it to pornography.

I was making a comparison...I don't believe seeing children commit brutal acts of violence is morally equivalent to seeing children engaged in porn...but I don't have an interest in seeing either.

No, but reading about audience reactions on other websites, people have been cheering during her scenes...I don't want to beat this into the ground, and I have never said you shouldn't go see this film. But I won't. Not in the theater. Might catch it an cable. And maybe I'll be wrong about it...But Ebert's review confirmed my suspicions, and I have a 6 year old daughter and just don't think it's something I want to support.

So... I'll ask again? What do you think of The Exorcist?

Again, CONTEXT...It wasn't a little girl. It was THE DEVIL possessing a little girl. In Kick-Ass it is a little girl doing these things of her own free will. I'm not offended somebody dressed up a real actress and made her do these things. I'm offended by what THE CHARACTER is doing in the context of the film.

I like the Exorcist and have a six year old daughter, should I get registered?

This movie is NOT for kids, same with The Exorcist.

Yes, I see that they are different but the bottom line is that each movie should be held to your quote.

Again, I liked The Exorcist, does that make me a bad Father? Am I supporting something evil against my daughter because I liked that movie?

I haven't seen Kick-Ass yet, but I will eventually.

How do you know?? Maybe her Father is the reason why she's killing men. Maybe she is being manipulated in some way? Maybe she's a Sociopath??

Does she really have to be possessed? That sounds like a cop out to me.

That may be true and I have not seen the movie. I just find it hard to believe based on the clips I've seen, the trailer, and other reviews that the film at all deals with the real psychological and moral consequences of what this girl does. It just looks like a cartoon romp designed to tittilate. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well I HAVE seen the film. I saw it in December at BNAT, and it kicked all kinds of ass.
Despite going up against Scorsese's, Jackson's, Jeunet's and Cameron's new films plus Murnau's Faust with live organ music, despite people having been awake for over 24 hours once it started playing and despite it not being graded, straight from Avid, with a temp sound track and a speaker in the theater being blown 15 minutes into the film creating a 20 minute break - it was almost everyone's favorite film of the marathon.

The crowd of over 200 people was clapping along to the music when Hit Girl was slaying badguys left and right with a naginata.

What makes it even more amazing is that it's an independent film.

Pornography? I don't think so. That was one helluva fun action comedy. Violence and language is NOT pornography.

As far as I'm concerned it's either fine to do what these movies are doing or it's not.
Yes, a proper message is always helpful but sociopaths exist. They kill without remorse and it's a real condition. Maybe he should have just made her swear allegiance to the Devil as to not piss anyone off.

I'll apologize and cool down now but I find the comments directed towards Fathers with daughters insulting.

MAH

But kids will see Kick-Ass because there are too many elements that are appealing to them. And they don't have the intellectual capacity to see it for the satire it may be pitched as.
If children below the age of determining what's right and wrong see this movie, that's the parents fault.

I won't judge a movie based on how it might affect a six year old who shouldn't be watching it.

My six year old daughter still hasn't seen The Lion King because I don't want to introduce her to Murder yet.

I would be more worried about 6-year-old girls watching SEX AND THE CITY, which they do. Here in Sweden that movie was rated so children any age could go see it without parental supervision.

At least if they take after Hit Girl they may get interested in martial arts, sports and self defense.

It's made VERY clear what can happen to someone who goes out and tries to fight crime in KICK-ASS. I don't think it'll encourage anyone to do something that stupid.

I apologize. I wasn't talking about anyone but myself with that comment about my daughter.
I know it wasn't directed at me personally but we do share the comparison.

No big deal. Movies are art and unless this is just pointless violence, I'll enjoy it for what it is. Hopefully it's not just a gore fest.

Good to hear, save the Sex and the City stuff. That's just sad.
