$4,000 dollars

For my friend, "Alright so i currently have around 4,000 dollards maybe a little bit more. I was thinking of purchasing an HVX200 with a cheap fisheye for skateboarding. I will mainly be filming skateboarding and maybe a couple events in the future. I wouldn't want to go with the EX1 because its hdv and not real HD. Is there any other cameras in this price range that are a better choice?
Thanks,
Sam"

Well, I don't see how he'd be able to get an HVX with a Fisheye and P2 cards for 4,000 dollars. Same goes for the EX1.
The camera is just the start of the expenses - there are batteries, media, and accessories to consider after that.

I would suggest that he either save up quite a bit more money - or go with a less expensive camera.
Perhaps take a look at Canon's HDV offerings, or consider sticking with SD and a DVX100B.

And for the record - HDV IS HD.
:)

If he's going to screw up the footage by using a fisheye lens, I'd tell him to get a $200 miniDV camera... but that's just me.

There's no such thing as a cheap fisheye for HD. I'd either save up a few more grand or buy a DVX and the Century/Snyder fisheye, you could get that set up for around 2,500.

He can get way more than 4k i was just putting it out there. A fisheye lens doesn't screw up the hvx at all. We need it for skatebparding and the 16x9 is 430 and really good. No vignetting, decent distortion, and good lens quality. Spending 2,500 on a fisheye is outragous. Can i have some legit feedback?

HDV is not true HD like the hvx and such.

Well, by definition, yes it is HD.
I'm not sure what would make something 'true' HD or 'false' HD.

As far as the feedback you've gotten - I think it's very legit given the way you asked the question.
You originally said he had 4K, and could maybe get "a little more."
So all the answers were coming from that information.

Now you're saying he can get "way more."
So I guess the main thing is - what is his budget?
That is going to dictate what he can and cannot get.

If you're deadset against HDV for whatever reason - then your choices get pretty slim.
In fact, I'm having a hard time coming up with anything other than the HVX
that would still be compact enough to shoot skate videos with.
And if that's the case - I'd suggest he gather somwhere around 7K,
depending on the requirements he has for recording time/power/accessories, etc.

$4,000 for an hvx and fisheye? are you buying it in a dark alley and is the guy unloading it from the back of a truck?

Personally, I'd get an HV20. That way, when you inevitably break it shooting skateboard videos, you still have 3,000 dollars left.

Just for the record, buying an expensive camera and placing ANYTHING cheap on the front of it, especially a lens is dumb. lol. Just thought I would throw that out there.

HDV is real HD. I work for a primetime PBS series and nowadays we shoot just about everything on HDV.

the key is that HD is a spec for resolution only - HD has nothing to do with color space. Now given the choice I'll take my dvcprohd over hdv any day. But disjecta and many others prove you can do some great work with HDV. Its not whats in the camera that makes it professional its whats behind the camera :)

SkatePerception is going to be all over you ass if you get a HVX, actually given your age/size holding a gem that valuable in your hand it's probably not good idea

I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting skateboarding with an HVX even if I could afford it. Seems like an example of a situation where an HV20 would do almost as well in most situations.
