Kick-Ass

Red band trailer. Something about this project is rubbing me the wrong way. I personally think if you get off on 11 year old girls committing graphic acts of violence there's something wrong with you, but that's just me--

Do you also have a problem with The Exorcist? Same deal as far as I'm concerned.
I don't "get off" on it, but a good movie is a good movie.

I think this looks great. Guess we'll see.

Yea, Kick Ass is tracking very well right now, I'll bet it becomes a franchise for the teen comedy market. Brad Pitt wants to get more into producing so it looks like he'll get a few more movies out of it.

I was reacting more to the way Harry Knowles and other people on certain sites are frothing at the mouth over this Hit Girl character. It disturbs me a bit, and I don't see the appeal of it. In Exorcist it was supposed to be repulsive. Here it's supposed to be 'cool'.

Cool or repulsive, it's still a little girl doing things that are normally done by an adult.

Either way, I loved The Exorcist and this one looks cool.
They are acting after all.

From the other thread, someone asked me where I saw that it's not as gory as the comic, here is the link.

Not Enough Blood
This is a tricky topic to be sure. While the film itself is violent, it's not nearly as gory as the comic book. But not every film can be a Kill Bill-eque splatterfest can it? That being said many times it felt like Kick-Ass went for the gag over the gore, swapping out gallons of blood for a few more "little girl swearing at the camera" moments.
It's like this poster. The blood has been changed to paint, so it's there in theory - but it just feels off.

From the other thread...
I have to agree with one reviewer, its a shame they took out all the blood and made it a cleaner story.

I think some people had the impression that ALL the blood was removed. It doesn't have to be Kill Bill bloody. The amount in the trailer will suffice for most people I'm sure.

Sounds like a move away from the comic though, as you've said.

I felt similarly about Angel of Death. It's not the age, but the message I don't like. There is a pro-murder agenda dressed up as revenge that offends me. Hollywood loves this mindless murder and mayhem formula. I don't.

Wait a minute... murder... is... wrong? This changes everything! Oh boy, is my face red, with blood.

Here's a 15 second international ad I think with a pretty good indication of the kind of violence/gore they left in (vulgar and violent)

Looks like Ebert had the same reaction to the film I had to the trailer--

Yet he loved a movie about a little girl poo pooing herself with a crucifix and telling her mom to lick her bloody you know what. Go figure.

And before anyone jumps up and freaks out that I'm comparing Kick-Ass to The Exorcist, I'm not. I'm just pointing out that they both had child actors doing some unspeakable things. The comparison ends there. Kick-Ass is a satire for crying out loud.

This is NOT the first time a child actress has been in a role that may cause some people to squirm. While I like Ebert, I'll judge this one for myself.

PS - I loved The Exorcist.

It's the tone he's finding objectionable. The Exorcist was serious as a heart attack, and its moral stance was about as clear as you can get. With Kick-Ass, he just felt the film was a celebration of the little girl's violent acts and that it wasn't effective as satire.

Look, I'm not a prude when it comes to violence. I can enjoy some mindless carnage like the next guy, just like I have enjoyed some pornography in my day...but I don't have an interest in watching pornography involving 11 year olds.

He certainly has a point. This is one of those films where smug 20-somethings will tell you that you just don't get it.

Which, of course, is untrue. You get it just fine. But even so, as you get a little older, you realize there are things you're quite happy not to get. :)

Sorry, I'm not offended by what I saw in the Hit Girl teaser for Kick-Ass and I get the satire.

As far as calling it porn, in The Exorcist we hear her telling the Priest that his Mom is sucking dicks in hell (my polite version) and to screw her up the a**!
Which one are you referring to as pornography again??

I just don't get the difference.

How can he turn a blind eye to that and not this?

Yes, this is not for kids, we get that.
I just don't let critics tell me what I can and can't watch. Especially when they come off as being hypocritical, in this case anyway.

It's either bad for little girls to behave on screen that way or it's not. Pick one. *
* This is directed more at Ebert than anyone else.

I am 100% certain Ebert never said you could or couldn't watch anything.
That comment was pointed at Batutta. Maybe it came off wrong.
He seems to have made up his mind based on a review and a teaser.

Now, if it's not his cup of tea then I get it. Still, you can't really judge a movie unless you've seen it.

Because one is clearly designed TO BE MORALLY REPULSIVE!!! That was the point! And it is. In Kick-Ass, it's supposed to be cool and exciting. I don't find it cool...or exciting. You're looking at it outside the context of the movie. I'm not.

But isn't a trailer supposed to get you to want to see the movie, by showing you parts of the movie? I've seen parts. I'm not excited to see it. And for other reasons beside the Hit Girl character, mainly because I haven't liked any of Matthew Vaughn's films yet.
