D90 feature "work in progress" screening

I am in awe...and not a lot of things do that. This is extremely well done...
I enjoyed every bit of it.....freakin awesome...kudos!

Where was the surfing location? Spain?

And regardless of format, this is probably one of the most intriguing trailers I've seen in a while.

faro maspalomas, gran canaria. we also shot some surf in el confital and the las canteras beach. nothing was actually shot in fuerteventura, the neigboring island, but it's a great name. :-)

panning works pretty much like a real steadicam, you simply hold the ball joint with two fingers and pan. you can's tilt interactively but you can balance the camera in a tilted position for high and low angle shots. i won't post any general production information right now but i will answer specific questions.

Matt, you said you were using the mini hague on a few shots... what lens did you use?

I'm considering buying it but their site says it's "suitable for all makes of lightweight handheld camcorders up to 0.8kg.". My D90 + 28mm AI is 850gr, I guess that would be ok, but anyway...

i used both the nikkor 24/2 and the nikon e 50/1.8. the latter is much lighter and much easier to balance, but with some extra washers it's not really a problem with the 24 either.

Matt, congratulations. Nice imagery; good use of light, color and frame compositions.

Since you are taking questions, I had a few:

1) Underwater housing for shot 0:05. What did you use? How did you do it? Love it.

2) What lens did you use the ECU of the eye at 1:07?

3) Were you concerned about the strobes during the nightclub scene? If at all, how did you plan/ prepare for it, considering the CMOS situation?

4) What lens did you use for the nighttime beach scene at 2:07? All the chairs till the very end are lit, so unless you had some big lights, I'm assuming available light from the lamp posts...? Love your composition and the color of the chairs.

5) If possible, could you tell us about the rig configuration you used for the camera (follow focus, mattebox, filters, etc).

Once again, excellent work; and you are true inspiration to student filmmakers such as myself. And thank you for being so generous about sharing knowledge. Good luck with the festivals!

18-55 stock lens. one of maybe two shots in the film where we used it. i needed a wide angle extreme closeup and the 24 doesn't get as close. we had a 70-210 macro that's great but it flattens the face. the other shot where we used it is a car mounted shot and we needed the vr. it's a completely worthless lens really, but even crap can be useful. :-)
3) Were you concerned about the strobes during the nightclub scene?
yes, but we just accepted it. we might do something about it in post, it's easy to remove the flashes, either manually or automatically and add your own that cover the frame.
4) What lens did you use for the nighttime beach scene at 2:07?
nikkor 24/2, 50/1.8 and 85/2. probably the 50 on that particular shot. i wasn't that involved in lens selection since i trust linus (eklund, dp) a lot and we had talked through how we wanted to shoot each scene and how we wanted them to feel emotionally. we relied on street lights. they're high pressure sodium i think, so very narrow spectrum in the yellow to pink range, but luckily orange is the dominant color of the entire film. :-)

nothing except shoulder support from dvtec. i own rods, matte box, follow focus and all that but we didn't want to look too professional, for stealth purposes.

Could you briefly tell us how this can be achieved?

I see. So you used filters on the lens. Could you tell us about some of the filters you preferred using throughout the film, besides the NDs?

Lastly:

- What did you use for the car mount, and can I assume focus was fixed?
- Did you have more than one D90, say, because of overheating problems?
- To your eye, what which one(s) does D90 handle better: tungsten, flo, HMI?

Thanks!

there are several plugins that remove camera flashes from video, they detect sudden changes in brightness and create new frames that are either duplicates of the previous one or a blend with the next one. for this purpose a manual approach might be easier and i've actually used it to remove a few annoying banding strobes from the trailer. just razor out all the flashes, shift them a frame late, add a brightness and contrast filter to create a full frame flash. strobes freeze motion anyway so it won't matter much that it's a duplicate of the next frame.

we used mainly nd's. a polarizer was used on the surf shots.

we gaffer's taped the shoulder rig to the roof rack. very professional. :-)

we had two, yes because of overheating. we shot all nightclub scenes with two cameras but all other scenes were single camera.

the d90 handles any light temperature fine, but since it's not always that sharp hard lighting usually works better to bring out the detail. is that what you meant?

Ha ha, awesome guerrilla filmmaking!

Yes. I also know that the RED camera looks cleaner with 5600k lighting and settings, as far as noise is concerned. Tungsten is a bit problematic for RED especially when scenes are underexposed, noise increases, color looks slightly muddy.

Oh, any tips for white balancing that you believe are effective and fast during production?

why would you wanna remove the nightclub strobes unless you're epileptic? You want strobes in a club scene or it's gonna look really boring.

What's with the orange grading?
