8GB P2 cards officially drop to $700

hmm. Things are looking really good for the near future.

That could very easily put 16gig cards at around 1200. Maybe even at 1k. <--- speculation.

Good stuff. Back on track with the P2 cards, what's left not to love...

No list of 4gb cards at all? Are they being phased or is there just not a price drop listed yet?

I don't know. I would imagine that 8 will become the new 4. 4's will be available for cheap in the second hand market, or just held on to. Kind of like that low capacity battery. You use it if you have to.

When 32 gig cards roll around. 8's could become a real hot commodity. They are great for the 720p 24pn shooter. Or even someone who wants to shoot minidv or dvcpro25 to p2 for ease of workflow.

Jason

I fear the 4GB is probably discontinued. Which is sad -- I'd really like to see a cheap 4GB card stick around. But when the 8 came out, the 2 was discontinued. With the 16 coming out, the 4 will probably be discontinued.

My big question is for the 4gb cards, are sites like full compass going to maintain the current 4gb pricing? Typically dealers pay the wholesale price. Wonder if pany is offering any rebates for the price drop/disc of 4gb cards. Myabe pany is going to allow them to RA them. I would rather have 2 4gb cards than one 8gb which is something I might be inclined to get if they came down in price on anyones site. I have the free 8gb card on the way and it sucks cause it just lost a lot of value. On ebay, it sucks cause there are a few auctions on there for 8gb and they are going for 700 and up, BID RETRACT!

BH still has not dropped their prices though.

Not necessarily. Anyone know when stores are actually going to be stocked with 8gb cards? I'd supposed with the price drop, new shipments are being received or something?

I guess it's like a PS3 deal: if it's not in stock then can't do anything about it.

We have a couple in stock for $695.

Oh and the 4GB cards have been discontinued for those that are wondering.

Well, I am going to watch ebay, if I can get 2 4gb maybe 150/200 a piece, thats not bad. this is definetly going to open the market for indi makers though. Its funny cause you can get two 8gb for the old price of one. If pany was smart, they would put their remaining stock into current hvx boxes. Then they could get rid of remaining stock and this would force people to stil buy another p2 card, adding to the value of the camera and to their pocket books. My biggest gripe with pany is that when you buy your hvx, you cannot fully take advantage of its feature unless you buy either the p2, softw, or fs-100. At least with the dvx it was ready to use all feature out of the box with tape.

Good news though, now we have to see how cheap the cards start going for on ebay, easily 500 is my guess.

If Panasonic did not sell the camera without the P2 cards, people who don't want P2 cards would be forced to pay for them. There are plenty of people who use the FS-100, their NLE, Scopebox, or DV Rack for most or all of their work, and I doubt they would want to pay $1200 or more for a 8GB card they'll never use.

Now this comment is for my specific, unique situation. When does anyone expect we can get 1.5 hours of true non-stop recording off of a single pair of cards?

Non-stop meaning no swaping, hit record, don't touch the camera for a full hour or more.

Just wondering out loud.

two 16 gig cards is approaching that in 720p/24pn. That's like 82 minutes.

With 32 gig cards at the end of the year, double that again. And 64 minutes of 1080p

What if you don't want to, or can't shoot 720pN? For example, you are shooting a live event, you have no idea what's going to be used as Slo-Mo or not. You shoot 720p24/60, then you have the option. So Native is not always practical.

I have a live concert at the New Orleans Jazz Fest next month to shoot. May run just over an hour. Three or four HVX's. 1 or 2 will be hand held. Those two hand held have to use FS-100's. The two stationary can use laptops with hard drives to record live. Very limited crew, one person per camera, one person recording sound. Native mode won't do it for us. Gotta have the flexability.

Just putting this out there for thought.
