FCP 5 settings for 24p advanced

I'm sure this topic has been discussed here but I can't seem to find it...

What are the recommended settings for editing 24p advanced footage on FCP 5?

Also, I'm shooting the footage letterboxed rather than squeezed so I assume that I want to edit in 4x3 and not anamorphic setting (?)

Thanks for any assistance.

read the sticky (yellow threads) at the top of this (FCP) forum which says "FAQ how to digitize 24pA footage..." it shows you exactly what to do with 24pA footage in FCP.

i read the sticky. but the settings don't look the same in my FCP. I don't have the option for capture framerate. But on the "Capture/Input" menu there is an option for "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldoown Removal" But that sounds almost like what the sticky was warning you against (the random deleltion of frames), but I don't see anywhere else to tell it to do "advanced pull down removal" in the capture settings. Has it maybe changed since the sticky?

Yeah I'm still slightly confused. The only place I see an option for 24p advanced pulldown removal is under the Capture Presets which, as the previous posting mentions, seems to be what the sticky warns against. Does this look correct?

what the sticky says is to use the preset for Advanced Pulldown Removal... what it is warning against is setting the capture preset to 23.98. setting it to 23.98 will make FCP just throw away frames randomly, whereas using the Advanced Pulldown preset, it identifies the correct frames to ignore.

That would make sense but I am still thrown off by the way the sticky reads... perhaps it's just not stated as clearly as should be.

NoahK says: "That is what the Remove Advance Pulldown from 2:3:3:2 sources checkbox in the capture settings is for. BUT in order to do this properly, the FPS setting in FCP must be set at 29.97 to give FCP the full firewire data stream and allow it to properly recognize the flags and remove the Advance pulldown frames."

"I know it seems counterintuitive that one would use 29.97 as the capture frame rate in order to ingest 23.98 footage but that's how it must be done because of the way the format is recorded to tape.

Thanks for the help. So this is correct?

One more question... by default on the 24p advanced pulldown it gives me a 3:2 ratio which it calls NTSC DV (720x480). Should I change this to NTSC 4:3 (640x480)? (I'm shooting letterboxed) Thanks.

Hi,
So, what would be the correct setting in FCP for footage shot in 1080i60 on the HVX200? I captured my images using the P2 cards, into a firewire and began the edit. I now realize that my audio/video settings were wrong so the dvd of my short has lots of wavy lines wherever there's motion, I think you refer to it as 'strobing'. Based on the above, I changed the sequence preset to HDV 1080i60; capture preset to HDV. Will I need to re-edit the entire film with the new presets, to include bringing in the P2 footage? Please help - I'm on the verge on a nervous breakdown. I appreciate your time.

There's not reason to make it more complex than it is. Use the Easy Setup for 24p Advanced and all of this stuff is set for you automatically. The only way you can mess it up is by changing the individual capture and sequence settings. :bath:

HVX footage is DVCPROHD/1080i 60. So you'd use the 1080 DVCPROHD 60 preset and then you would capture via the P2 Import dialogue. HDV doesn't come into the equation.

Not specifically as such- but a bunch of the stuff on the DVD applies to the HVX- in terms of FCP workflow. :)

Noah,
I now realize that the problem with my 1080i60 project is that I have multiple frame rates at work. My DP downloaded some files as QT, 23.98; the remaining files were not converted to QT and are at a frame rate of 29.97. Sadly, I wasn't conversant enough in the process to realize this when I began editing. It was never my intention to edit this project, but I ran out of money. That said, what do I do now? Must I convert everything to QT files and create a new edit? I'm lost. My thanks in advance for any counsel.

Hard to say without seeing the whole project- easiest way to fix would be go back to the original camera media and capture everything at settings that match the original.
