Canon R5 Announced with 8k

CR is (now?) giving credit for the photos to DC Watch (DC means "digital camera", not District of Colombia, btw) but DC Watch has a couple more shots that CR didn't upload, including the bottom of the camera. Which looks sealed as well. So, there probably won't be any vents. The rest, obviously, depends on the final specs. Time limit in 8K HEVC? Possibly. Samsung S20 Ultra has 8K limit of 5 minutes @ 600 MB/minute with HEVC. New chips are very efficient.

PS. Some sources say that Samsung will cease recording 8K at 4 GB file size but will then restart.
 
A bunch of Canon gear is on sale at usual places. New models are on the horizon; the EF got to go.

Yeah, I never understood the square/rectangle/sharp edge designs of (a lot of) the mirrorless cameras, like the A7 series, etc. I always though the 5D series felt great in the hand to actually use, as a still camera.
 
Please, Canon, remove the 30 minute video recording limit! Even if it means paying extra for the feature and requiring me to mail in the camera to your service center to install the new firmware. I'm happy to pay more for the option!!!
 
So close! Now that the 8k is confirmed at 30p without a crop, all we need is 10bit 4:2:2 and no 30 min time limit and Canon will have made the ultra hybrid camera. Sounds too good to be true. We will find out in a few months. I hope they are seeing this as a way to convert folks over to RF from EF. It sure is the only way I will chuck everything and move to RF.

Same here. If Canon does what you're describing, I'll switch over to a bunch of RF lenses immediately. If not, I'll keep all my EF lenses as is.

Well, do you really want a telescoping 70-200 lens for example ? I don't see that as a move forward for shooting video, even though it is smaller and lighter.

Yes it's H.265/HEVC 10bit 4:2:2 at 480Mbps IPB.

I guess the question is, can a Leopard change his spots? My money is on no, but Canon, very, very occasionally surprises us, like they did with the intro of the C200.

That we are still saying this over a decade after the 5Dmkii, makes you realize that no, Canon will not, because people still want Canon. They don’t have to give anyone anything more than they are. Brand loyalty is amazing. You see it all over this forum.
 
Brand loyalty is strong, but i have not purchased a Canon product since my 5DMKIII. Adding a few features in the R5 might get me to buy a lot of Canon products on a replacement cycle. If not then no sale. Hopefully the market might be forcing their hand to speed up the timeline as in five years the camera market will be even softer. But yes, I have learned to not hold my breath with Canon.

Marvin, how do you know this info about the codec?

You are stating this as fact. I can see the reasoning, but I haven't seen Canon go on the record with this. Do you have a source?

I'm cautiously optimistic about the R5. I'm looking at it to replace my 1Dx mkII, trading some of the speed for resolution and entry into RF. I'm pretty sure it will be a stellar stills camera with sweetspot resolution as an allrounder.

Regarding the video features, Canon says FF (not cropped), 8K, 30fps, DPAF and internal.

Canon has been pretty proactive and open with information about this camera. So how come they don't go on record with 10bit and Canon log?

In 2020, 10bit is for free with the "new" generation of HEVC. What was a pro feature a few years back, now comes routinely with cheap drones and such. 480Mbps is not a lot for 8K, but being IPB and HEVC will probably still produce a clean result, especially after conversion down to something useful. I'm personally not in the camp that feel 8K is useful for video, but sampling it down to 4K should produce very nice images even if it originates from a lesser codec.

But my view on 8K is: it's too data heavy in production quality (for personal use), and too computationally heavy in 10bit HEVC without hardware support. I've got AMD gfx in my workstation and laptop that supports HEVC encode/decode on paper, but it's not implemented in software/drivers yet. It's been announced, and would help a lot to make a 500 Mbps, 10bit HEVC a truly attractive option. But they would need to have Canon Log in there too.

Maybe we've reached the point where it's simply one of Canon's default codecs? But when Canon makes a special update/communication about the video features of the R5 and omit to mention codec and picture profile... well.... Those things would certainly have made for nice bullet points on a blog entry.

Apart from that: small and light, RF with option to go EF plus ND, in body IS.... and what... half the price of a 1Dx mkIII? Sure!

I have no problem with the RF 70-200 being a telescoping lens. I appreciate that it's smaller and easier to pack than the EF version. My EF 24-70mm is telescoping, and I use it for video all the time.

Exactly. Just let me shoot more than 30 minutes at a time and I'm set.
