My guess is that it's more like with the stitched-sensor ARRIs yielding more dynamic range. John Brawley told me that only cream of the crop ALEV sensors were selected to create larger-format cameras, and that they performed slightly better than average with regard to DR, but that otherwise there was no reason why there would be a DR advantage over the S35 Alexa. Obviously, that's not what goes on with the 1D vs 5D but there could be some other unreported quality control or component difference.

Quality-control is a given and an obvious explanation that shouldn't even be mentioned because that's just the way life works.

God himself isn't making these parts so they aren't divine and will naturally differ. They cannot all be perfect, it is impossible.

So I'm sure their form/condition/whatever affect IQ - and Jarred himself once said on REDuser they throw away dozens of sensors on a daily basis (or weekly, IDR) - but other than that there is no doubt it's software-related because that's how they calibrate the looks in-house. One sensor used in the same camera could produce totally different pictures (like two different models).
 
Everyone does quality control but there's no reported spec concerning how their acceptable parameters differ. I read lots of reporting on the alexa mini LF, all of which mentioned greater DR but none of which mentioned quality control as a factor. Brawley spoke with someone involved in the manufacturing which was why he knew.

Or take Zeiss Otus lenses, for example. I was just reading an article at diglloyd about how shitty the QC of Sony GM lenses is (and other competing manufacturers) and how virtually no copies in the wild live up to their MTF charts. But he wrote that Otus lenses are tested at the bench to ensure their performance, accounting for their premium price.

I just read through the Otus marketing page on the Zeiss site and nowhere does it mention their superior QC, let alone quantify it
 
Anyone try it on the R6? Love the camera but the over heating freaks me out. I'm now recording to a Ninja V with the $99 HEVC addon to make sure that doesn't happen.
 
I don't think the R6 has the same potential for long-duration recording as the R5 since it suffered from worse overheating to begin with. Maybe it could go longer than it currently does. But even the R5 will shut off during HFR recording with the new firmware. And it can only go for duration if you're comfortable with your cards becoming too hot to hold. There are definitely some thermal issues here even if they intentionally crippled the camera at the outset
 
I'm lucky it has not happened to me yet. I use the Ninja V if I know I am going to be recording longer. I'm starting to use the Ninja a lot more anyway since I shoot HDR PQ and the HDR display on the Ninja shows a lot more of the range than the Canon LCD does. Plus its a larger 5" screen at 1920x1080. Just ordered a loupe for it as well. I have been waiting years for the 5.2" loupe version of the 5" version I have for the P4k. Its nice having a 5" HD EVF to shoot with.

So any professional work will likely never run into the heating issues. I would just like the peace of mind if the camera is stripped down to the barebones but oh well. It is what it is.

Now if only Canon would add external ProRes raw to the R6... I think I have given up on that wish. I may have to wait for a R6 mk2 assuming I even stick with Canon. Canon seems to be ignoring the R6 and now I hear about a defective hot shoe issue that many have had to ship their cameras to Canon for repair. There are times I miss the almost fool proof reliability of Panasonic. Not without their limitations but at least I knew I could trust the darn thing.
 
I don't think that Canon is going to give you a fair shake at R6 prices, unfortunately. Every company has their drawbacks. What maddens me is that my a7iv can fine-tune shutter speed to defeat LED strobing/banding but my a7siii and fx3 cannot. Sigh.
 
I have a hunch that Canon has something brewing in the sub-$2,500 range with either the RP or R replacement. Or both. It's been bandied about for ages. Then, one might see a decent R6 firmware upgrade.
