well you have a point there, but do the maths as well.
i always considered everything above 2-3000€ as rental only, especially considering the short lifespan of these new cameras. every 6 months a new and better one is out etc..

i`m a dp for more than 10 years now and i never owned a camera.
i used canons as "lightmeters" and own a gh2 of course, but these are not the cameras my projects are shot on.

if you can make the c300 pay off the investment then it may be the right camera to buy.
although your 5d stuff looks great already :-)

My prediction for final street price..... $13990.

Did you guys see this yet?

Native Canon lenses support , small size , good codec , grate picture - now you just need the script and the money for the production :-)
Even with 15 grand price its nothing for what you can do and do it fast without be robed by red with its data management
For people who don't really in the biz even 8 will be to much , the price is nothing for pro :-)

- Next camera for me - it cost less then my audio recorder :-)

Yep! Plus you have 1,000,000 5dmk2 shorts online to judge from. Now take away the moire, aliasing, and the codec. Now give it a sharper image and know that you have pro features and you get the C300. And, it will work every time you turn it on. Then you get a better codec that is still easy to work with in post (speedy).

Have you seen footage from Sony's FS100? It's incredible and that camera can practically see in the dark...Sure, the ergonomics are a complete disaster and the codec is 4:2:0 but surely the C300 is not worth $8000 more than the FS100, is it?

but surely the C300 is not worth $8000 more than the FS100, is it?

How do you price 2+ stops of DR? or internal, broadcast standard 4:2:2? Or an extra few hundred lines of resolution? Or better ergonomics? etc etc

For some, these extra things are not really needed and are only worth an extra couple of $k.... for others, they are well worth the money. The simple fact is, if Canon overprice it, not enough people will buy it and they will, hopefully, learn a lesson.

Once again I think Canon knows who their market is... just like Red knows their market... I got a nasty pm when the body of the R1 was released at 17.5k.. I said at the time it was a big boy camera... well turns out I was right when I said he's going at the big guns not the smaller guys...

Its funny that no one seems to say well the Canon by the time you're going to shoot with it.. its going to be double the price... where many Red and Epic owners seems to say so... it'll cost double what you think.. and funny that I have to add this... last feature I line produced we got a great deal on a R1 with Arri Master primes from Panavision (love the look so far).. and sadly an actor I know sold his to cover his post costs on his film.. so there went an even cheaper rental... of course no Master Primes...

To me its going back to the days when Avid's cost a 100k or the Film Composer was 40k... an post production supervisor told me back then.. unless you can pay it off in a year don't buy it... because like I believe it was wooden who posted above... with digital it's always changing... my friend I where discussing just renting for those reasons...

But another friend and I are thinking about trying to do some local TV spots... so the idea of the Canon is right for that... simple in and out for post... the quicker the better when you're not making as much as when you work on a film... just my after turkey day thought for the day... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

technology is always about driving costs down ... no matter what industry you are in

A friend who used to assemble computers said it was the same on equipment to assemble them... a piece of equipment that cost him 2m was only worth 650k 2 years later... because the technology to assemble them was changing just as fast...

or I heard a guy joke once at Best Buy at the cash register... he said by the time his credit card bill came in for buying his new computer the newest model would be on the shelf...

I think his point was that alot of people were instantly hailing RED as "winners" without working out what it would actually cost to kit it out for a full days shooting. RED would be double the cost whereas Canon is almost ready to go (add lens, CF cards and extra battery).

Oops relatives keep asking me ?'s as I was writing... what I meant to say... out of the box you can shoot with the Canon no matter what the price is (yes lens & other things are needed)... while with the Scarlet (10k price)most Epic and Red owners I know say you have to double the price... guess it seems that people who say the Canon costs too much.. never seem to say that the Red will cost you a lot more in the end...

Not talking about 4k... 1080p and all that stuff... just prices...

Figures the net slows down when I want to look this up...

14.5 Scarlet package
4.3 red volts (going for 12 hours total
.5 extra power pack (I think this is how someone came up with 4,800 from before)
3.2 extra red mags (probably enough with the 2 cards that come with the package)
22.5 total...

that is how I get double over the 10k or 9.75 price of the Scarlet

I know I'm not perfect on my batts and media... but I figure that's close enough for a 12 hour day... I'd rather spend more on batts and make sure they're charged before the days shoot than go with just enough batts and then recharge during the day... murphy's law things can happen...

Canon of course guessing now...

16.0k
.5k extra batts probably
.5k cf cards I'd just mirror the footage for safety sake...
17.k

so with that 5k savings... spend an extra 1k an get the battle tested Red 18-85...

Though lets remember there is a difference between a basic shooting package and a proper shooting package. You could make due with no red touch screen(if you have your own or add a 300$ Lilliput 5inch) and the rest of the basic package(1 64g red mag, 2 redvolts, travel charger etc..), not perfect but it will work. Now should you do this no, but can you shoot with it for under 14k yes, yes you can(before taxes and such). Plus there is always the possibility of adding more pieces to the package later on... especially media as 64gig's is not very much.

Choices are great and so is modularity, and so is having a complete package like the C300. both seem like great cameras, interested to see what the end users produce with them, fun times!

Actually, it will.

Actually it won't. And no ones mentioning something some consider more valuable than money - Time. Rigging, editing, post conversion, transcoding . 5lb vs 15lb. 4:2:2 broadcast vs. Raw

scarlet $14K gets you 23 minutes of 24p 4K shooing on 64GB, 6:1 compression, with single battery life around 30 minutes. If thats enough for anyone then yeah its ready to go. Then copy, debayer, transcode that 64GB and factor in the time.
