A7s sample footage

If you look at the highlight detail on the steps its interesting that ISO 51,200 in SLOG2 looks the same as 6400 in all the other profiles. one stop higher in the other profiles clips the highlights. Whereas 102,400 In SLOG2 is actually still barely holding on.
So there is at least 3 stops difference, if not 4.
So my guess is that "ISO 3200" in SLOG2 is probably close to 0 gain on the sensor itself. Something like ISO 200. With arithmetically boosted lows and mids.
Is that good or bad in your opinion? :)

Is it only me, or others see a great potential in the IQ (overall impression) but yet just ... like something is missing. Like some settings are incorrectly set and whole image is somehow polluted (like to aggressive noise reduction).
Another thing are those harsh edges around highlights - I find them really ugly (2:05 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvTMpX5NpeM and in other videos as well).

I cannot wait to see some proper tests from pro's...

This deals with STILLS, but I found it interesting - who knows, maybe it does tell us something about the sensor. Not super impressed, to be honest. I mean, yeah, sure the A7S can go to ISO 1 billion, but so what, if it's nothing you'd ever use, meanwhile, the A7S is really no better than other cams at more practically usable ISOs. I'm interested in ISOs I'd actually use, not theoretical ISO BILLION!!!UNO!!!. Anyhow, comparison of STILLS made by dpreview between A7S, A7R and Canon EOS 5DIII:

High ISO compared: Sony A7S v. Sony A7R v. Canon EOS 5DIII

"If we were to sum up our thoughts thus far on the (Raw) high ISO performance of the Sony A7S, it would go something like this:The Sony A7S enables the use of incredibly high ISOs, including some unavailable to most cameras. When shooting at incredibly low light levels, the A7S will most likely give you significantly better results than any camera that does not natively shoot at these ISOs. There are also some advantages to be had over the higher native ISOs of the cameras we tested: we see the A7S overtake the A7R in normalized shadow noise performance at ISOs above 6400 in our tests. At more moderately high ISOs (6400 and below) as well as in brighter regions of images - where image quality is determined primarily by how much total light is captured - the normalized ISO performance of the A7S will be similar to that of full-frame cameras of its generation."

So far I have liked high ISO with NR turned off, nice grain. I can do whatever NR I need in post. I hope that in camera NR is the source of edge problems.

Starting to feel the same way. It's almost "gimicky" really. I find it funny how there are a lot shots where they turn night into day. It looks not natural. Strange really. But as I've said before...up the ISO chain I've noticed it loses DR. Testers should find its sweet spot so serious shooters know when and where to stop before the image really degrades. Everything after that is just...."toyish." But I guess that sells cameras.

To me its good as I'm more interested in highlight latitude. But if ISO 1600 in SLOG2 is possible it should be provided. I find it difficult to spot the highlight edges thing you mention, but its something to keep an eye on. We'll see when someone tests with sharpness set to minimum.

That wasn't bad at all considering it was the middle of the day. The latitude looked great. Next would be to see what magic comes when hitting that with some curves.

Not bad but no better than most other HD DSLRs out there.

Exactly my thoughts! For some reason I had higher expectations than that! Low light performance is the only real advantage I see so far and while is great, I dont know if its enough reason for somebody to switch from another brand...!
5DIII in raw could easily be much better in the same shots in my opinion.
I hope new videos will prove me wrong!

I wonder if you will be able to output 4K through the HDMI to a non 4k recorder and get a hardware conversion to 1080p like I've heard the 1DC can do. Then the a7s and an ninja star recorder could be a great combo for a small footprint with slog2 prores.

Only questionmarks right now: Rolling shutter, DR and skintones.

don't forget any video stating it used <iso3200 is not using slog2 and therefore is operating with seriously reduced DR.

Yes that is true...however I find it really annoying to be forced to use 3200 ISO in daylight if I need to use slog2. Im sure there is a technical reason for that, but I think it will be a pain for many users...

From what I've seen, the Arizona footage looks soft in comparison. Could have been the ND filter, or could it also have been that the 1080 box wasn't ticked off on Ashley's Vimeo account. ...he also mentions using the cropped mode, and how useful it was. I am waiting patiently to see more test footage!!

Well it's not quite that simple. In my experience you can (and should to minimize noise) rate/expose SLOG2 1-2 maybe 3 stops over and still get good results depending on how much highlight room you need. If ISO3200 really represents the optimal gain setting, possibly the same setting used at much lower ISOs in other modes, it may not be such a problem. In bright daylight you might just ETTR, exposing closer to ISO400-800 even if the camera says ISO3200.

Agreed. What is that 8-10 stops ND if you need f2-2.8 in bright sun? That's a lot of ND.

Even with these limitations I am still leaning towards the A7s over the GH4 as an upgrade to my current GH3. It will be nice to use my vintage lenses as they were meant to be used instead of cropped and the noise in the GH4 above ISO 800 turns me off. I will miss internal 4k as being a one man band it gives lots of crop options so maybe I will have to save for the Shogun and I have a feeling more brands will come out with 4k recorders.

Cameras change so fast these days you are really buying a sensor and this sensor has some special qualities not found elsewhere and is no worse than the competition at the stuff it doesn't do well. Raw workflow has no interest for me.

Exactly what I plan to do: shoot slog2 ISO 3200 in daylight as if it was ISO 400-800.

the Arizona video is 720p with a strange crop. The youtube version has a 1080p option but I'm not sure that it's not just upconverted to 1080p. Probably the wrong timeline settings.
