A7s sample footage

One note - I downloaded the original file from that video - it's encoded at 30p and I suspect it might have even been shot at 60. And....it's clearly shot interlaced. You guys are obsessing over an interlaced file.

Oh yeah! Although... I don't think being shot interlaced is the cause of the highlight aliasing, but it could well make it look worse.

I just saw that Paul already noted that. Anyway, download the file - it looks like garbage, and it's clearly because of choices that the shooter made. They seem to have a PZ lens on there too - not sure if that's then an APS-C, aren't the only PZ lenses in E mount APS-C? So this is probably crop mode too.

That might well be a contributing factor to how obvious these un-haloed highlights are too.

This video, posted before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1x3jPqntmM
is interesting - in the notes he says an interesting thing about the image processing:

"Testing the Sony a7s video's internal digital zoom resolution. Recorded internally at 1080p/24fps with XAVC S 50mbps, shot at ISO 3200 using an LA-EA4 adapter and Zeiss 24/2 lens. From the test, there appears to be almost no resolution loss up to a 1.5x zoom. From 1.5x to 2x, the image seems to be simply upscaled. Considering Sony claims the a7s to record 1080p even when in APS-C mode, it would make sense that it downscales the 4K sensor to 2.7K internally, leaving just enough resolution to provide a 1080p (or 2K) image for APS-C 1.5x crop. This explains how shootin full-frame mode allows up to a 1.5x zoom without image degradation."

I'm betting that at some point today or tomorrow, somebody will shoot a proper cat video we can all get excited about. Hopefully it's a black and white cat so dynamic range can be thoroughly put to test.

And foliage pans: we are missing that too.

On a more serious note, I have to point out that I can't turn sharpening completely off on my 5N: even at the minimum setting, a test chart shows there's still some sharpening. As many other things, this is not a problem for me (it is very minor, and saves me the step of adding sharpening in post), but others may not like it.

Just a moment of observation...

I remember in 07 when I was shooting an HVX200 with Redrock Micro adapter...firestore drives...ect. HD was a fairly new thing for smaller companies. That rig was huge. With decent lenses, was somewhere in the 15K range. Took forever to set up....terrible in low light. Had to be on a crane or tripod....tons of maintenance.

I wouldn't have believed in 7 years a camera so small could blow it out of the water for a fraction of the cost. Thats pretty cool.

Thank God I don't have to carry that giant rig around anymore. Great images for the time, but glad to be past that technological era.

I think our best bet right now is to wait until tomorrow when Erik gets his A7s in. I'm sure he will do a proper test :)

ReelWorksMedia - I know I sounded a little harsh. But I see some crazy macroblocking at 3200, but not once the ISO is raised. Probably because the shadows.

Just thought of something. So, when using the Metabones adapter...the autofocus function is very slow...sometime not useable. That probably means the auto focusing in video mode feature is probably going to be pretty bad as well, right?

I would normally not use autofocus...but on a gimbal...its pretty nice to have. Anyone have thoughts on that?

You might need to pick up some E mounts eventually for that purpose. For me, I was hoping to have a bit of autofocus shooting interviews - the subject moves a bit forward or back and I lose focus. Currently I use a Canon 70-200 IS II for interviews - a very good looking and sharp lens to be sure, would hate to use something else.

Yea, I love that lens too. I have a nice collection of L glass. Never needed a Sony mount. That is a bit of a bummer. Its a tough call.

EF lenses don't have the fastest AF around adapted to E mount, here's a pretty good video showing Metabones V3, it hunts a bit before locking. AF is a tad slower on my A7 when shooting video compared to stills.

V4 improved the internal reflection issue, but I can't imagine AF has dramatically improved by much since its not a native lens and uses contrast AF. The Contax G AF adapter does the same thing.

Honestly if you want to use AF to trim focus while shooting, pick up the FE 28-70, people shift new copies from the A7 kit for about $250 and its a good lens. Or just go manual and use peaking, when its red its really easy to keep focus on the eyes. Everyone is different, but I always go full manual when shooting interviews to avoid the hunting and abrupt changes AF systems make. For me its easier for subtle changes. YMMV.

If you look at the highlight detail on the steps its interesting that ISO 51,200 in SLOG2 looks the same as 6400 in all the other profiles. one stop higher in the other profiles clips the highlights. Whereas 102,400 In SLOG2 is actually still barely holding on.
So there is at least 3 stops difference, if not 4.
So my guess is that "ISO 3200" in SLOG2 is probably close to 0 gain on the sensor itself. Something like ISO 200. With arithmetically boosted lows and mids.
