A7s sample footage

So, today is the 20th....anyone find any Sony video releases...or is the grainy toilet shot all we get?

Nope nothing so far, although I suspect the Japanese dance video released yesterday was part of Sony Japans marketing push. Apparently that dance group is pretty big in Japan. Interestingly, it was shot in May on a pre-production camera/firmware, so before Sonys firmware update on may 30 that according to Sony expanded the dynamic range.

Matthew Allard just tweeted that he will have a full review up on newsshooter.com later today :)

Baby Alexa anyone?

These don't feel right. Blues seem to go overly magenta and skin too yellow/green. I guess the Alexa profile doesn't mesh well with the source a7s video.

The A7S seems to match the FS700 pretty well and the FS700 has what? 13-14 stops? That's not bad at all. This camera is begging for a GLog or some other custom profile though. That would open it up and make it come alive.

Remember, as stated before, he shot these under the worst conditions he could think of for the camera - used the crop mode, used avchd, bad lens, no tripod.

I was really hoping for a better DR - around 11 stops seems on a par with the GH4. Hopefully the image looks not that noisy like the GH4 shows (even at iso 200)...

Different measures of DR.
I got 12 stops on the Canons if I think "if the waveform shows a signal, it counts as a stop", but only 6 if I think "it only counts if I can discern small low-contrast detail in the shadows".
These 11 stops (if they actually are 11 stops) are not the same as the 11 stops of the GH4.

If it’s anything like the FS700 it’s going to be way better than the GH4. From experience (based on comparison’s with my C300’s 12 stops of DR) I'd put my GH4’s video DR far lower than 11 stops... And even if it does come close to 11 stops it doesn't handle them very well ;-D

Also, all these figures for the A7S are random figures that people are pulling out of the air. I guess I missed the class on how to accurately determine the number of stops of dynamic range in a recorded image without knowing the original range in the scene itself... Stupidly I assumed you'd need a light meter and a waveform monitor. Never mind... at least I can still get onto the "disparaging the camera by calling it too 8 bit" course :D :D :D

To be honest I'm pretty disappointed in Sony's marketing today. I expected a full court press from at least Asian reviewers with much more sample footage released. Has there even been a press release from Sony Japan today?

Samuel you should be able to measure the rolling shutter at around 15:00

Here's a screen grab

Downloading the file... which will take around two hours, vimeo is really slow today

The most important bit in that video: 720p120 is SHARP!!! Or at least a lot sharper than I expected. Happy happy happy me.

Also: from what he says, it seems the a7s needs the same 16-235 levels thing that my NEX needs: it records 0-109, but the metadata is not read correctly by Premiere, so you have to add a levels adjustment to claim your highlights back. Anybody not doing this is going to complain about the highlights.

Yea, my favorite part was somewhere in the middle, when that stuff did that thing...then made me want to buy that camera. That was cool.

In one of the clips there were two satellites flying against each other, I thought they might crash. If that didn't put you on the edge of your seat, I don't know what will!!

I think I may know whats going on there. They forgot. Its an honest mistake...between doing laundry, paying the bills, grocery shopping....ect....must have just slipped Sony's mind.

Meanwhile...we have 100s of DVX users foaming from the mouth.
