A7s sample footage

Fortunately there will be some downtime between the launch and the release of the Shogun. Could make the financial impact a little easier. Make some coin with the camera in 1080P, then buy the Shogun in a few months.

The shogun seems like it's been designed as a very versatile recorder/monitor that will be useful with any camera. It feels like a separate cost rather than part of the 4k solution for this camera because it will probably have a long lifetime. I love that atomos uses regular hard drives and doesn't make their users buy proprietary drives that are stupid expensive - one reason I'll never buy the 7Q.

This one falls under the category "useless as a test video because the content is too much fun" XD
(I had to watch it like five times, I keep getting distracted!!)

Now, more seriously...
I think it's 1080p60, because:
* I don't see any twixtor artifacts, even in slomo shots where the dancer is in front of a really difficult background.
* I don't see any obvious aliasing/moire artifacts, which means it can't be 720p120... because man, if 120p is that clean... no way, let's not get carried over, it has to be 1080p60

Also: see how the lights have star streaks in many night shots? e.g. at 2:40 --> That's f/11 or narrower, on the street, at night, with available light. WOW.

Looking good.

I would say that this aps-c test is clean but relatively soft (not really soft, but softer than the FF mode)

Not surprised, they'd have to take a centre APS crop and scale that by an uneven number, there just isn't enough resolution to do that. I wonder if there was the chance of a crop mode which took just the 1920x1080 out of the centre of the sensor. It would be a higher crop than APS-C but would give good video results.

cheers

And I do think that's relevant - a lot of 5DIII owners are the ones that are going to be asking "is this a replacement for my camera" (including myself) since it's in the same price segment and sensor size. At the end of the day, that's what I'm trying to determine - is this a good replacement for my 5D, which I like the look of but am a bit unsatisfied with the level of detail/clarity.

+1

I felt the same way when I saw the A7s and GH4 - so I ordered one of each and sold my 5d3. So far I like, but not 100% love the GH4. The more I see from the A7s, the more I'm thinking the GH4 could fund a Shogun...

Hope I'm not the odd man out...but personally, I'm not a fan of the GH4 image. I think it looks fragile. It just feels like the low end of the spectrum could just fall apart with even a very minor push. Its noisy. The resolution is there...but, to me, it already looks dated. Yes, there are nice elements to the GH4, but for me, it doesn't seem to be an image that I would choose to incorporate into my productions. All respect due, its an awesome step in camera technology, I totally understand that...but for my projects, its just not quite up to the bar of standards.

I'm going to shoot some beach tourism promo stuff here in Florida when the A7s arrives and I'll be shooting the GH4 at the same time. The best image is what going to make the cut. A week from Monday they're supposed to start shipping in the U.S., next week is gonna drag.

You're not... I've felt that way about most of the m4/3 cameras. I'm not quite sure why people get so excited about the GH4 image wise - I think as EOSHD bounces from camera to camera overenthusiastically stating that this is the greatest thing ever, while then making pretty terrible looking stuff in his "films" that people get caught up in the hype. There's some very nice GH2/3/4 stuff out there but I think the people who made them would have turned out a good product with any camera.

Yep, agreed.

I agree to some degree, but there is something about the color science on the GH2 that always impresses me. I haven't seen that at all in the GH4. The GH2 smooth mode has some of the most pleasing color I've seen in any video camera. The GH4 just doesn't have the same thing going on. Panasonic should have thrown out CineD and CineV a long time ago and started from scratch, they were always their best gamma curves but just nowhere near good enough, with such terrible looking highlights.

Looking like the a7s captures around 10-11 stops of DR, matching the fs700. Not a huge leap but definitely the best of any other compact offerings, short of the 1DC
