A7s sample footage

That's a nice comparison, i assume the FS700 was just native AVCHD out and not with the O7Q. They appear to cut together quite well, the 700 a little sharper. I noticed on the A7s some black highlight edging like the stock 700 does too.

Realistically the DR is going to be around 11/12 stops like the 700.

Certainly the video looks like best in class.

I wonder when they'll hit UK shores...

cheers
Paul

Urg! That was the reason I got rid of my FS700... I loved everything about that camera (other than ergonomics), but those black edges around highlights destroyed what was otherwise a very "natural" feeling image. And my particular shooting style I seemed to manage to get them on every shot!!!

I remember reading somewhere a technical description of why it happens (basically it's something to do with mathematical rounding error that causes pixels near highlights to be interpreted as 0 (black)). The F5 had the same issue, but Sony fixed it with a firmware update. No such luck for the FS700 (and I would guess for this camera too).

So far I was loving everything about what I was seeing from the A7S... I've already bought and abandoned a GH4 for it's ugly, ugly highlights and shadows. Come on Sony, don't do this too me. Booo!

Maybe I am reiterating what lyrov alluded to and what freiheit specifically posted at the beginning of the clip. It's all APC mode, so how can conclusions be drawn from that sample alone?

* The APS-C mode test is a torture test, he throws hell at the camera, and I think it survives. There's some moire, but it's soft monochrome, nothing like Canon's rainbows, and it won't be there in FF mode. As a worst case scenario, I think it's a success.
* From the train shots in the video with the dancers, the RS seems to be an issue... only in the most troubling shots: everything else is absolutely fine! I think RS is going to end up between my 5N and the D90 (the slowest DSLRs I have tested), and I think I'll live with that quite happily. YMMV.

Baby Alexa anyone?

Remember that's AVCHD in APS-C mode with Nex lenses. Can't wait to see how it looks full frame with Leica-r glass recording straight to prores.
