A7s sample footage

You didn't try hard enough. This is my test. Math says it should be the same, and the test is close enough for me, by which I mean exactly the following: I would say there's about the same difference between two 50mm lenses at f/2.0 on full frame and between a 50mm f/2.0 on FF and a 25mm f/4.0 on m43. And different electronics and color encoding also creates a difference.

In any case: yes, this is probably not even a GH4, just a handycam downscaled to 540p.

I call BS on the A7s/GH4 comparison, the blown highlights on both sides look GH4 all the way. Until I see a still of both cams shooting the same scene, not a believer, this is click bait.

Actually I'd guess that neither camera is a GH4 or A7S, looking at that user's other videos, all of his comparison videos look fake, either all shot one camera or maybe even just stolen footage.

….plenty of blocking and banding…. noise level is more relevant in this test than dynamic ranch, and the noise level does look low, so if the banding and blocking are only compression issues then it's got some game, but not sure if it's a game changer…..You still need an external recorder for the 4K and a hot shoe XLR for balanced audio, so the small size get's bigger fast…nice camera and I might own one, but after some time….specs does not an image make.

I am very sceptical of the GH-4 comparison. Feels fake. Still waiting on Den Lennie to post his GH-4 vs A7s test. Apparantly it is 2 videos, 8 minutes each so should hopefully provide some answers. If he ever gets around to finishing it that is. He's been teasing it for like a month now. . .

That A7S/GH4 comparison is as fake as that great white shark go pro video doing the rounds at the moment. It's just the exact same shot from the same camera and lens but 30 seconds later with the saturation boosted.

There was a post pointing out all the reasons it's a fake on the youtube link yesterday that I noticed was promptly deleted; no doubt "worldofdslr" doesn't want people to get that they are fakes.

Well, it's useful in the sense that it tells you how your footage will look once it has gone through the vimeo compression
And it looks much worse than other stuff we had seen before. Plain midtone areas are not as clean as I expected from previous tests.

i will not believe any test that is unsure they using a7s right now. just wait 20th officially release announce (4 more days), and all the a7s test ppl will upload and post their video and review out.

The noise up to at least 12800 ISO doesn't bother me at all, it's filmic looking monochromatic noise which is so much better than the Canon fixed pattern noise I'm looking forward to seeing the last of.

The lowlight capabilities in this thing are mesmerizing. In the sense that anybody getting his hands on one can't help but point it at a dark room. OK, we get it, now somebody please check if DR is as good as we are hoping, and whether RS is a huge issue or not. Thanks.

edit: maybe the thing is moonlight powered and can't work in sunlight?

Until we see downloadable original files none of these tests are very useful. Having battled with encoding for vimeo and youtube i can see how many different ways there are to get the footage on there at various levels of quality. If these are MTS files then we don't even know if they have been clipped to legal ranges for example. The Seoul night stuff has that kind of clipped look as well as video-y over sharpening. There are tools in you tube you can just 'edit' the video in situ, maybe they've been applied. Until i see a real, camera original downloadable file these are just eye candy with any of the issues we're interested in well hidden from view.

By the time an Alexa gets to vimeo it can look the same as a GH4. Vimeo/Tube are the great camera democratisers (if that's even a real word)

cheers
Paul

It would be interesting to see some footage of an A7S in Super-35 crop mode with an EF to NEX SpeedBooster- twice as much light. The illusive ISO 1 Million won't be long now :)

But then you're losing the full sensor readout, aps-c means pixel binning. Why start with lower IQ when there are so many cheap 50/1.2 legacy lenses and low cost fast 1.4's like the Samyangs? 51200 looks pretty clean, paired with a $350 nikon 50 1.2 will turn pitch black into daylight.

go fs700 forum there u can read one of the a7s user talking about crop mode with a7s will give alliasing and moire. So for the best result use full frame better, just in some case you want make it more zoom with your lens, then crop mode is the choice.
