Zacuto Shootout Part 3?

Ok...what the poo poo?! So they used the Gh1 with the kit zoom and the other SLRs with Zeiss poo pooing primes?

Right...that's scientific!

They didn't have an adaptor? Pffft. It is beyond easy to get an adaptor for m4/3 with just about any lens mount ever freaking made.

Ben...why your insistence that we used kit lens? Where did this nonsense come from! I did reply to your comment on the Zacuto page but you could not have seen it!

I found it strange, that during the test with the girl and the flowers in part 3 the GH1 was further away.
All others had just about the same distance to the objects, only the GH1 was different. Why?

Oh, and I think Zacuto's pro-Canon bias is pretty blatant. Not subtle at all. Although it would be nice if Panasonic made some effort to recognize the reality of & promote the GH1's capabilities as a pro tool, they don't. However, that's no excuse for Zacuto and others to ignore that reality. But it's Zacuto's "store" and website, so they obviously can do & promote whatever they want. I'm OK with that, but it's one of many reasons I'm disinclined to buy anything from them.

Peter, what you have written is absolute nonsense. Zacuto have no bias. Where do you get that from? They don't care which camera comes out best for in these tests. Sometimes the paranoia and assumptions made by people baffle me.

So I ask you Peter. Where is the bias. What are you seeing that I have not? We went out of our way for this to be a fair across the board test. It's just a shame that neither Panny or Nikon accepted the invitation for the shoot.

I was not there for that part of the shoot. The problem they have is all these chips have different crop factors so a 50mm on one will be more telephoto on another so matching the framing is tricky...although I admit they were a tad off on some of them :)

The notion came from the fact that the GH1 latitude chart test was out of focus and Steve made some comment at a screening about not having a proper adaptor for the GH1.

When we did the first tests (I was not present at the colour and greenscreen tests) they did not have a GH1/ Nikon Adaptor but they had a 4/3 to micro 4/3 adaptor hence they used the 4/3 Zeiss. A compromise but still a very nice lens.

There is nothing between 7d, nikon apsc and GH1

There is nothing between 7d, nikon apsc and GH1

in crop fator-fov, on GH1 in 16:9, may even be the same, so am not sure what happened.

Hi, Philllip nice to hear from you here, i have a only concern about the Zacuto test and was the fact of the were almost no comment of the GH1 shots from part of the Zacuto team and the people in the audience, give me the impression of just using the GH1 to emphasize diversity of cameras SLR with video features and nothing else. I don´t know how sales are going on the Canon side Vs Panasonic, but i believe that Gh1 have many users around the world (i´m from Venezuela and cost me almost what a 5dmdkII cost) and my believe is with the video capacity of the camera, many users of the GH1 expect to hear from the professional guys, comments about it, and thanks for take a time to discuss here.

Cheers and congratulations for you 10mill

Cheers mate.

I think most people were just a bit underwhelmed by the GH1 to be honest, compared to the wow factor of the 5DmkII. I was not at that last screening so I can't say for certain. All i know is for the part I was present at people were surprised that it did as well as it did. As I have said, I love the camera and cannot wait for the GH2

Not true. The 7D is a larger sensor than the GH1...also a different Zeiss lens was used hence the change in framing...but I was not present so I can't comment with too much authority on that....

Well, different crop factor ok, but you only have to look on the LCD monitor to see, that the picture is further away than the others. Also 5d MKII has a different crop factor as 7D, still the picture looked similar.

Also, why people think it was a pro Canon thing is the fact, that everybody only commented on the 5D and 7D as if the other cameras were not there.
At least one did not hear a thing about the GH1, even though I think it did pretty well in a lot of the test, also seeing the price of this littel camera.

Anyway it was an interesting test and they put in a lot of effort to do this.
Hats off for this.
It is easy to criticise but very difficult to come up with something comparable to these 3 shootout parts.

So thanks Zacuto for the effort and the interesting results.

as i said. i was not present at that large screening but to be honest it's most likely because the Canons excite more people in the film business and that's simply a fact. Also the Canons gave a more pleasing image in every test. It was only in low light that the Nikon became a wow. The panny was always generally a so so...

I know you guys didn't after I went back and watched, but at the time when it was suggested I overreacted a bit.

Understandable, and makes perfect sense now as to the focus distance problem. Same lens is ideal, but that's the next best thing.

Anyway, I think most of the emotion/drama over here is because there hasn't been much information from anyone about specifics...which leaves the door open for conspiracy theories, etc. Thanks for providing as much as you can! We really appreciate it.

In part 1 the Gh1 is praised for it's out of cam, baked in look. In part 2 everyone in the theater goes crazy about Nikon's high ISO performance. It's true they talk about the Canon's a lot, but to me every single guy involved in the shootout seems to (or at least tries to) be very open minded and objective on the whole subject.

Not true, myth you are way off Phil

In 16:9, gh1 is using a 19mm wide sensor, 7d is 22mm wide, so a full 3mm bigger, wow, in the vertical the GH1 is 13.5m, 7d is 14.9mm, wow, full 1.4mm. Now, the 7D is 3:2 format sensor, so it has to scale, chop the frame down more, not sure what happens but reality is the 7d is not even true 1080p, 1670x900 or something, lots of scaling going on. So, you will find GH1 is 1.8x crop in 16:9 and 7d at best is 1.6(3:2) but more likely 1.7(16:9), in effect they are the same but GH1 has higher resolution in 1080p and bigger pixels, 4.36microns c/w 4.2 on 7d. All in all GH1 is superior size pixels, more pixels in 1080p, higher sensitivity 2x 7d eg iso400 on GH1 is iso800 on 7d, etc etc etc.

This is incorrect. You're referring to when you capture via HDMI and it crops the image. If you don't capture via HDMI you are capturing 1080. Though to be fair none of these DSLR's are true 1080 when you look back at Barry's resolution charts.

It looked pretty damn sharp on that resolution test though eh? Although really it appeared pretty sharpened and aliased...but no more than I expected.

Still...I wish it was on a different stage because I think on all the cameras we lost detail (especially in the fans) due to the latitude, not the res.

OK, let me talk about a few things here. First off when dealing with chips this size MM matter. Secondly you are making guesses here but most importantly...

Who cares! stop pouring off specs and numbers and just shoot with them! I don't care what the resolution is of the camera as long as I get great pics from it and I can get great pics from any DSLR!!

This was the only time I shot any charts in bloody months and have no desire to do it again. For me a test is how the image looks to me and how the camera is to operate. Two of the most important things FOR ME. Am sure many will disagree and insist on pouring over charts and specs. That's fine, but I will be out shooting whilst you do that ;)

Just correcting you, plus you now know a 50mm on GH1 will be same as 7d prety much. Also GH1 is not a dslr;-)
