Zacuto Shootout Part 3?

Ok...what the ****?! So they used the Gh1 with the kit zoom and the other SLRs with Zeiss ****ing primes?

Right...that's scientific!

They didn't have an adaptor? Pffft. It is beyond easy to get an adaptor for m4/3 with just about any lens mount ever freaking made.

I am ok to use kit zoom if they want.
But this must be clearly stated in all footage.
And long talk about light bulb rendering using ultrazoom with comparison with very good prime (closed down, btw) is just strange.

I was at the AFI LA screening of the tests, there was an hour or so of conversation with many more details about the tests. Steve did try to explain that they didn't have an adapter for the GH-1 so they didn't use the same zeis glass so they couldn't get the macro of the latitude test right. The only advantage is the GH-1 being at a higher stop allowing for more sharper images in some of the tests.

So did they use different Zeiss glass or the kit lens? If it was the kit lens that would mean they were using it wide open instead of stopped down (so at the worst part of the lens) and that would also explain the pushed ISO (which reduces latitude.) That's nuts. Also worth noting that a Zeiss f/1.8 prime at f/4 will be much sharper than the GH1 kit at f/4 (because it's wide open at f/4.) Hell it's probably worse than a Zeiss lens at f/1.8 for sharpness on critical focus.

I'm also ok with it...but then they do need to state it and they need to throw out any pretense of it being a "scientific" test. Why not just use the same bloody lens? Unfortunately they've been less than forthcoming about any details for anything...which is stupid, given that their stated point of the test was to show people what the cameras are capable of. They clearly haven't done that.

Also, again, why the hell do a resolution test on the same stage as a latitude test? A lot of the detail on all the cameras (thinking the fans here) was thrown out because of the latitude not the resolved detail. The results ended up being the same as the latitude test basically!

When I was watching episode 3, there was mention of ProRes, and some of the speakers seemed to suggest it was the codec to use for further processing.

Since I only have Final Cut Express, that is no ProRes, but I do have the full package of Adobe Premiere, what is the codec of choice to go to from the GH-1's native AVCHD?

Is AVC-Intra a competitor to ProRes, or just a different ballgame completely?

Additionally, since one of the elements of 'color grading' is having adequate color spacial resolution as well as bit depth, what tools 'uprez' the GH-1's color sampling to something 'better' for continued processing.

GH1 was used with stock zoom while others with Zeiss primes?
This is as I understand it.
And how they can start this lamp rendering talk if they use ultrazoom lense and compare it to prime? Are they nuts?

gh1 would definitely underperform with that slow kit lens!

Three Stooges Camera Shootout:

Moe: You couldn't find a GH1 adapter? Take that!%&&@!!
Larry: But Moe, it's not like you can order one and have it FEDexed overnight!
Moe: Take that!!#&&!!
Curly: Our R+D dept coulda whipped one up, but we were too busy making sure those Canons got plenty of rest and beddy-bye!
Moe: Take that!%$#!! AND THAT! %$##!!!
Little Kid: This shootout is nuked!

Not taking any sides at all. My suggestion would be just to ignore shootouts. Most of the time, unless done by very very technical individuals with no agenda (Camera Houses and Industry DPs with no stake in the survival of any format or camera company's product), there is a heavy bias at play.

I am not pointing any fingers, I haven't watched a Shootout since the 35mm Adapter comparisons back a few years ago. IT was then that I disregarded any information from these things...

When DPs like Claudio Miranda do shootouts, that's when I'll pay attention.

It was pretty clear that Canon was the winner on number of mentions. And further, I do attribute this in part to Panasonic's view that the Lumix is a 'consumer camera', and not much is going to change that.

I wasn't able to go to NAB this year despite my attempt to plan to... but last year when the GH1 was 'soon to be available', and I stopped by the Panasonic booth and asked about the GH-1, after several people who gave me dumb looks, like 'never heard of that camera', I ended up with someone who clued me in on where 'Lumix' was in the Panasonic 'pro' world... down the hall, out to the taxi stand, and come back for a consumer show...

I was sort of amazed that it got on to the Zacuto program in the first place...

No, amazing is that how Panasonic happened to have it not to make results better by providing technical help.
Normally good guy who know how all works from internal side can be very big help. Plus, of course they must have provided all possiible adapters and bunch of prime lenses.
I also agree with Panasonic about consumer cam, but they yet to know consumer who buys GH1 :-)

that seems to be the truth haha

i went to the San Diego Zoo a couple of weeks ago, and of all the dslr cams i saw (yes, i counted), i saw 23 Canons, 2 Nikons, 1 Sony, and one Lumix( the one i was carrying). and funny enough, only ONE video camera.

And interesting thing is I bet that best footage was produced by camcorder.
I tried my FullHD Panasonic camcorders together with Canon DSLRs in similar situations.
It is not possible to compare for fast casual shooting.
Canon footage is large shaky thing with exposure and focus problems, compared to smooth, good looking camcorder footage. And my 3CCD DX1 do not have any rolling shutter. I love this small tank.
Plus I can't even compare usability (zebra, controls, etc) and sound (level setting and monitoring, 5.1 sound with internal mics) here.
Current DSLRs are not best choice for average customer who wants to shoot their life events.

i also agree with you there, however, i neglected to mention, it was one of those aweful Sony dvd camcorders. not sure if that makes a difference :-)

I find the HV20 is still handy to have around. Sometimes it's faster to use with instant AF than the GH1 with manual lenses. The T2i looked pretty good in the tests. We've been considering a 7D or T2i lately, but after using a GH1, they seem a little clunky to carry around.

Lumix is an Official Olympic sponsor. The GH1 was everywhere during the Winter Games, one of the official Lumix cameras. London is next, Russia and Brazil. That's quite a big consumer market alone. GH1 ads were all over the city. Here's a GH1 subway car (Skystrain)

If they choose to spend money that goes to such advertizements to firmware improvements they could double the sales in a week.
Advertizements is a good and required thing, but heavy advertizement is usually a sign of other problem and instead of fixing that problem managment decides to do that they know and understand (spending money :-) )

DX1 is also Panasonic DVD camcorder :-).
I love it, as it is build like a tank, weight is good for such things, viewfinder is also good (as SD1 do not have one).

In general I agree with you tester13, but thankfully there's the occasional above-average customer. For example, check out this fellow's "home movies" ... wow!:
http://www.vimeo.com/12120150

This requires amazing amount of work on editing and producing final result.
Problem is average customer do not do this.
Plus shooting is good, no fast panning, zooming, no going while shooting, etc.
Average guys do not shoot like this, so GH1 won't help them.
Even in case of good HD camcorderr it'll still look good.
