Who bought the D300s

Just out of curiosity: Is their anybody in this part of this forum that actually bought the Nikon D300s?

If Yes: Are you happy with it and what type of work do you use it for?

I´m waiting for Nikon to step up against the 7D (like most of you), but I´m tired of of it and are wondering about if I should buy a D300s while I´m waiting.

Meh, you probably wont find to many people around here who did. This is a video community as so im not sure how many will line up to pay more for something thats inferior to canon's 7D video wise.

I did.

I am a photographer moving into video. A D90 would have been a sidways move for me so, instead, I upgraded to the D300s.

It's very nice as a stills camera but clearly lacking as a video camera. I am begining to wish I was a Canon shooter, but i detest the Canon ergonomics for stills.

I still might buy the D300s if the price drops more but it would be more for the photography side of the camera. If you work around the limits of the video it can look pretty good. When done right I really like the look of Nikon, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with 1080 HD which I think we will see next year.

The Canon 7D is good to but you also have to be careful. I've seen some really good video from it but also some bad video too.

Here is a good D300s video.

I agree with the ergonomics. Maybe it is just because I've used Nikon for 25 years but after playing around with a 7D it just felt heavy and awkward in my hands. It could just be what you are used too I guess. The D300s I played around with at Robert's Camera was very nice to hold.

The weight of the D300s was ok to me. The 7D might even weight less it just seemed like it was more. Probably just what I'm used to with Nikons.

I really wish Nikon would listen to what video people want. I realize that, before the d90, the last thing they did anything with real video was their super 8 cameras, but if they would step it up a notch they could really make some video guys (film makers) happy. I think the Nikon cameras handle highlights better and there is something more film like about the footage. I would jump to Nikon even if all they did was give us full manual control.

Knastra, I'm more of a music producer trying to shoot music videos and the one thing I hated the most about the D90 was having a nice shot messed up by "mushiness". The image quality on the D300s is much more reliable to my eyes. The lack of manual control is still a pain but I deal with it since I just can't get myself to like the Canon look.

By the way, I also use it as a still.

trying to shoot music videos

Same here. I am only interested in music vids (right now) with deliberate, controlled and intentional lighting, as opposed to the ambient light that the shots in Zim's link has.

Member Vinyl Stax is the perfect example of what I'm interested in.

I always see shots from Vinyl Stax videos that I know would look better with the D300s. It's sad that Nikon turned so many people off because now I don't have many experts coming up with great tips :(

Having been a long time D90 fan and a cinematographer who hopes Nikon will do the right thing in the future I can honestly say that the D90 and the D300s are so similar in look that it would be extremely difficult to say that a video shot on a D90 would have been better if it was shot on the D300s.

I was really hoping for even the slightest improvement with the 300s and there really is none. The only thing that seems to be better is the alias problem the D90 had seems to be gone, but we already had a workaround for that.

After seeing some 7D footage that my friend shot over the weekend I am pretty much convinced that the Canon looks better then both hands down.

Which doesn't make me very happy right now.

Only time will tell.

I think the 7d is overall the best DSLR for video to date. It's going to change, but I don't think it's going to be Nikon that changes it. I am still hoping for some improved 7d guts in an xl body...oh ya.

I actually just picked up a used D90. I was looking at the d300s, but really, cant justify the 1700. I looked at the 7D but I too hate Canon ergonomics. I also love my Nikon lenses. Again, maybe Nikon will still give us a firmware update...then again, maybe not.

One can be sure that if I would jump on the Canon-wagon today, Nikon would release something I wanted instead next month or so.

I to have great problems with the ergonomics of the Canon cameras. Once you get used to those two great scrollwheels on the Nikon body, theirs no turning back (for stills that is, I recon it´s the same for people who shot video).

I´ve shoot some stills and video with the 5D and can´t cope with it. It feels like a low-budget camera, and having one scroll upfront, and the other all the way down on the back is hard to get used to. It´s sad that Nikon doesn´t step up. They have the best body´s for sure (ergonomics and feel).

Let´s wait another 6 months and get disappointed again shall we?

Did you guys compare the D300s to the D90 in a real project and concluded that there is no substantial difference between them? (IQ wise)
