Who bought the D300s

Did you guys compare the D300s to the D90 in a real project and concluded that there is no substantial difference between them? (IQ wise)

Yes. Like I mentioned before it looks like the aliasing issues in the D90 were minimized in the 300s but that's all I noticed.

Well, I definitely noticed a big improvement in the quality. No more "mushiness" or "smearing paint" artifact in my footage.

Well, I own a D90 and played with a 300s at Wolf camera and noticed two big differences.

1. The 300s will autofocus while shooting video. This is super important if you're having trouble seeing the lcd on a sunny day.

2. The 300s exposure (when not locked) is much smoother than the d90 and doesn't give you that strobe effect when subtle lighting conditions change. You can follow a subject through the room and not have to worry about under or overexposing or strobey video.

This was observed at a camera store testing the camera for about 10 min so I yield to an actual owner of a 300s if I my observations are incorrect.

I own the 300s I can whoelheartedly say that the 300s is stroby as all hell, without AE lock.
If the ridiculous amount of strobe I have with my d300 is actually less than the d90 then the d90 must be completely useless without lock, because the 300 is borderline useless.

Haha, I was just thinking that companies like nikon will read our posts and think: "They only want manual controls and then they'll be happy???? Well, then we can make them wait much longer!"

We should probably be vehemently angry and demanding much more, and then.... maybe.... they'll update the firmware to allow manual controls. =)

I have the 300s, bought mainly for video but also to replace and aging D200 so weight wise it is pretty much the same. As for video, I am VERY happy with it, yes there are a lot of ins and outs to learn in terms of getting the best exposure, avoiding strobe etc. But when married with a good support system these cameras produce results that blow our existing HD video cameras out of the water. We use a Panny 202 for most video work, and the Nikons footage is head and shoulders ahead of it. That being said though to make the D300s do exactly what you want requires a lot more elbow grease than the Panny.

I also bought the D300s recently and I can say that I am very happy with the quality of the video. The only problem that I have with the D300s, which is a problem with a lot of people that bought this camera, is the lack of manual control over video. somebody mention that this December Nikon is going to release the new firm ware fro some of Nikon cameras and I am hopping that it will also be for the D300s. IF they came up with a new firmware which you can control the ISO and the shutter speed I will be a happy bunny, so will many other Nikon users. I mean I can control the shutter and the ISO but I have to flash a light in front of the lens so the camera can choose the low ISO but is pain in the bum to do that every time you are ready to take another shot. Also you can never guess which ISO you are filming.
Other wise it's a great camera only lacking for that extra fines to make it a grate camera.

There are NO PLANS to for any kind of manual controls, or firmware update. I have contacted Nikon recently and they have told me as much.

Same here. They have no plans people, as most users are happy enough and Nikon don't consider it a priority. Unless you guys complain hard enough to them...
