What's the SCARIEST movie you've ever seen?

Dark Side of the Camera
When I was 6 or 7, the leper colony scene of Fritz Lang´s " The Indian Tomb" scared the living sh..t out of me. Kind of early zombie stuff.
The only other film I found really scary was REC
Like Orphanage it was Spanish, but there was an US remake a year or two later called Quarantine - the original was way better though.
Another good one was Fragile with Calista Flockhart, but they messed up the 3th Act.

Since we're talking SCARY here, and not GOOD, The Strangers probably frightened me the most. Ridiculous plot holes, but scary as crap.

The whole thing was the look of the house a few rubber doors and the sound design. Scared the crap out of me when I was ten. I saw it again about eight years ago and I can see why. Combining the look of the house with the startling sound, nothing is more effective than using the "radio of the mind".

I vote for House on Haunted Hill (1999). Fantastic creepy visuals. The movie is much better, though, if you just turn it off about 10 minutes before it ends.

I'm going to have to go with: "Psycho," "The Amityville Horror (the original)," "Halloween," "Damien: Omen," and "Friday The 13th II." I was trying to think of something that really scared me after watching these films that continued into my late teens and even adulthood.
The things I learned from watching these films were:
1. People can have some really crazy secrets.
2. Houses can have histories - possibly be haunted.
3. A killer can be watching you and waiting for you to slip up.
4. 666 is not really a good number.
5. Don't have too much fun or sex, because Jason don't like that.
These are all kind of after-thoughts, but there's one thing that I still really, really think about whenever I'm in water that is at least 10 feet deep (doesn't matter if it's a swimming pool, the lake or the ocean) and that's to watch out for the shark. "Jaws" is probably one of the scariest movies ever made. When I go back and watch it now, I'm like, "It was a great movie for it's time, but I don't know why I was so scared," but d*mnit, I'm still on guard and ready to fight whenever I'm in deep water. Stupid freakin' sharks!! LOL!

Absolutely - the Exorcist.
I refuse to rewatch it even to this day. I was 10 I think when I watched it and was home alone at the time. It was a very hard walk up the dark stairs to bed after that.

Absolutely. I made the mistake of watching Jaws (as a teenager) right before a trip to Cape Cod. I've never enjoyed swimming less.

Oh yeah! I forgot about Jaws. That really ruined the family vacation for me that year.

I know! To me if the water was deep enough to where a shark "could be in it" then a shark "could be in it." I've been SCUBA diving in lakes before and I'm still looking out for 'em! Jaws is NOT sneaking up on me!

Yeah, one of the best of French cinema. That, and HAUTE TENSION (AKA Switchblade Romance and original french title Haute Tension). Another one I liked from french crew was The Hills Have Eyes, the remake...I really found it scary!
I should definitively watch it. Never did, I'm still waiting to be "in-the-mood" to watch it.

I should re-watch it. First time I was about 13-14 and I found it scary, but not much. Now with a better eye maybe.

...When I was 12, I read Blatty's "The Exorcist", so I actually hated Friedkin's movie version when I saw it a couple of years later. ( the story seemed rushed, left out way too much, and I did not find it that scary )
I love Carpenter's "The Thing", and bought the DVD as soon as it came out, but again not the scariest movie for me. ( lot's of good scenes that make you jump )
The scariest movie for me has always been Ingmar Bergman's "Cries and Whispers" which totally creeps me out every time I watch it. ( I can't find a good trailer for this movie )

I don't scare as easily anymore, but when I was a teen I saw "Halloween" and that scared me pretty good.

Yeah, I don't swim in the ocean much... probably because it is typically about 55-65, maybe 69 mid summer... and this is Sunny Southern California... and occasionally we would have a shark or two... but pretty rare that there would be a shark attack... still I hate the ocean, apparently for good reason...
And, not to leave the "Exorcist"(1973) out... I hate pea soup... have always hated it, also apparently for good reason...
