What's the SCARIEST movie you've ever seen?

I was 7 years old when my father took us to the drive in to see The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. All I remember is that there's a kid who finds out his father is a werewolf, and I don't think he can tell anyone, and there's SEVERED HEADS IN A BAG!!! Anyway, I didn't like horror movies for quite a few years afterward.

In the 80's I got chilled out by The Believers, and that voodoo magic is gonna get you nowhere to hide thing.

By far, for me, in my lifetime, and taking into context..........

Toss up between Jaws and Amityville Horror. Saw those as a kid, and still have nightmares. Learning to scuba dive was ........ let's just say...... interesting. Knowing sharks have a great sense of smell, peeing my wetsuit when a seal zipped passed me was no real help. Nearly did not get my NAUI card, seeing how fast I headed back to the boat........

Still cannot swim on the surface of the ocean, under it....okay.

The Exorcist, The Omen trilogy. The omen worked for me because of "that" soundtrack... More recent chills I have to say the Grudge 2 (Japanese version) and Insidious. The third act of insidious was a bit crappy but the first 2 worked very well. Stayed with me after the movie ended! ( which meant looking over my shoulder that night :)

In this order, the Exorcist, Don't look now (1973 Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) which is a gem.

John Carpenter's The Thing is awesome. Alien over Aliens for sure. My favourite would have to be The Exorcist though. It's great on all levels.

The Thing with Kurt Russel was awesome. Alien over Aliens I agree with this every day of the week. Alien was scary and timeless. Aliens is an action film and dated to me, fun but dated. The Exorcist, excellent movie. I'm going to throw Session 9 just as a film a lot of people may not have seen.

Jacob's Ladder, the first hour of Event Horizon, and Cujo.

Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorites, saw it in the theater, after the movie we went for a ride on a haunted road in the mountains of Santa Clara, CA known as Hix(Hicks) Road, just for fun, my friend rolled his jeep half way on the 45 minute drive and 4 of us where stuck up there... one of the girls needed medical attention... very creepy night, kinda sounds like a horror film plot on it's own. Funny thing is I saw "Shocker" at the same theatre and police came into the theatre about half way into the movie, with their guns drawn, we found out later someone had robbed a store in the mall and ducked into the theaters.

Another one I really enjoyed from that era was Angel Heart - an Alan Parker film (if you don't know Alan Parker - Pink Floyd's the Wall is enough said)

I checked under my bed after seeing The Sixth Sense as a freshman in college. Possibly slept with the lights on that night...

Sixth Sense if basically a Jacobs Ladder rip off. I read somewhere it took M. Night 10 drafts to realize Bruce Willis' character was dead, funny thing is that's the movie, for me if you don't have that the movie really would not have been good.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Paranormal Activity" I thought that was genuinely creepy and an ideal concept for horror (making you scared of your bedroom, the most likely place you will watch the film or go after watching it). Blair Witch had me too.... I guess you either love or hate those suggestive sort of films.

The Shining and The Haunting (another suggestive film) get my vote, from the past.... As well as an old film called The Changeling, never revisited that one, so it might not be at all scary.

Insidious had me laughing from the title music onwards...

I have to say Blair Witch just didn't work for me. Before blair witch went to the cinemas, I saw a direct to tv film that was about alien abductions that was exactly like blair witch: same found tape concept, shaky cam, etc. The only "found tape" film that worked for me was Cloverfield. Well done that one. Also loved Sixth Sense. Great little thriller. It is a ghost story but I don't know if it should qualify as a horror movie...

I like to think that there is a category between thriller and horror. The sort that just chills you... Sixth sense is like that, the scene where he gets locked in the cupboard at the birthday party is very chilling.
