We are cheating for IBC...

What I was getting at is that, depending on who you believe, the "real" resolution you get from a Bayer Array is 70-90% of the actual number of pixels that make up the sensor.

So to get "true" 4K resolution, you'd oversample (say at 4520x2540). But as the sensor is 4900x2580, you still get information around the edge of the recorded frame.

I'm assuming that what the RED team has done is to actually record the full 4900x2580 output from the sensor, but they're telling us that in the Red One we'll have a maximum output of 4520x2540 RAW - which still leaves us a 380x80 margin around the frame, and should still allow us to create a "true" 4k image from the RAW output.

Jez man....

That's a lot of Rez....

Jim, someone suggested a "screening party" for those that have put down reservations.. You had replied "good idea". I realize that you are a little swamped right now, but do you expect to do something about this in the near future?

I do feel for people that need to buy a pro camera to use right now...

I'm 99.98% sure that the next camera I own will be RED. Wow, I'm gonna jump from a DVX100 to a RED camera next year. That's blowing my mind a little bit!

So if you are doing shoot test, does this mean you have a functioning camera??? I know we would all like to see a picture of the prototype.

OK. We are going to cheat at IBC. I said it in public. We will, unless a major castastrophy happens, show 4k footage at IBC. But it really won't be 4K. We will cheat. It is really 5K scaled down to 4K. We have a true sensor size of 4900x2580. So actually we will have to scale it down to 4K for presentation. This is news we wanted to keep secret but I couldn't sleep at night. Now I feel free.

Please remember that we will have had only one month to get the full images up off the sensor, characterize the sensor, color correct the sensor, shoot, compile, and edit. Then package for a 4K projector we have never seen.

I hope everyone will forgive us...

BTW, when the camera ships, the largest size available to shoot is 4520x2540.

Jim
...LOL

Just perfect, Jim :) We already knew: you're an artist!

Hey Jim,

Bit of a personal request this one but...

It's fairly common with these things that the footage that's demonstrated is all very nice and incredibly dull - bowls of fruit, pretty model sits in front of camera smiling and flicking hair, baboon scratches butt etc.

Any chance we could see something a bit more, erm, "fun" at IBC? Something with a bit of a story that also shows off the camera? I know the logistics of it might be a bit problematic given your statement above, but thought I'd ask anyway!

Wouldn't it be better to crop it rather than scale it?

just a thought..

oversampling always creates a better image. The only advantage with window is optically it shoots the sweet spot of the lens.

exhibition price??

exhibition price??

Hi, I'm considering going to Amsterdam next month for IBC. Amsterdam's my home town as a matter of fact; anyone need a tour guide at reasonable prices, let me know:) . Purpose: to drool over the RED footage, hopefully without red baboon butts being scratched in it. Wouldn't that be an awkward sight, several hundred camera geeks in one room, all drooling over 4K shots of a baboon scratching its... never mind. Erase that image from mind. :banned:

I just saw some of the entrance fees: 1600 euro's without pre-registration! But the 'exhibition only' fee is free if registered in advance (which I did). Leaves the question: how much of RED can we see for free :love4:?? I saw this:

Friday 7th September
16:00hrs – 17:30hrs IBC Big Screen Presentations from RED - FREE
icon10.gif

but what about this?

Saturday 8th September
IBC Big Screen Presentations from:
RED 11:00hrs - 12:30hrs
To free or not to free? Zat is ze kwestyon! Us Dutchies are cheap, ya know...

Also,
can we put down a $1000 downpayment for the RED at IBC? Are there any kind of installment/financing plans to pay off the remaining 16.5K over time?
If I can pay it off over the course of 3 years, I'd be a very happy camper indeed...

You can put down your coin right now. Just go to the Red.com site.

You could get a loan and pay that off over 3 years or lease it with a buy out if you need to finance.

IBC is two parts: conference & exhibition. The exhibition (so you can visit the Red and other booths) is free (if you register before August [21st I think]). The conference is $$$ and consists of talks on various topics.

The auditorium / digital cinema is outside IBC and you may be able to enter without an exhibition pass but I would **NOT** count on that. So get a free exhibition pass (hurry!).

The footage is being shown on friday & saturday in the digital cinema (see my earlier links)

Holy Crap! I saw a 4K Sony presentation last year at NAB of some footage from India that looked ridiculously amazing. If RED looks anything like that, the paradigm is about to torn obliterated.

How about putting that breadbox on Jim's Funny car?

How about putting that breadbox on Jim's Funny car?

I'd love to some slow motion funny car footage in various speeds. Or Jim can go shoot Ashley Force dragster with the new 300mm lense! Beats the heck out of wildlife - anytime!

We are getting as creative as we can with no time left on the clock and a camera that doesn't want to move....

Jim
