Thoughts on rumored 5D Mark IV

"add a dual readout" is a veeeeery complex thing, it requires a sensor redesign, a lot of circuitry redesign, and a processing redesign.

Yes, they surely know how to do it. I'm just saying it's a lot of work. It's not something you do in three months, that's a three-year project. Maybe they did it, but then it wouldn't be "we just added dual ADCs..."

Canon already had dual ISO amplification in the 5dmarkIII, it was unlocked by Magic Lantern, though it only worked on separate lines. But it did work.

Well, considering the size of the company, I am sure there are a number of projects run in parallel, so once something is deemed ready for prime time, it's unleashed across the majority of the product line a la their Dual Pixel technology.

It looks like some of these patents go back half a decade, which is a darn long time in the electronics biz.

That's a completely different thing. On the 5D, you are still sending the analogue signal for each pixel just once. Some rows are amplified more than others, but there's no parallell signals and no parallel processing. The kind of design I'm talking about requires dual hardware paths for each signal that has to be read.

The clearest argument against this being an easy thing is: given the pain Canon has had to endure because of its DR disadvantage when shooting RAW stills, if this was easy to implement, wouldn't they already have brought out a DSLR solving that issue?
Just as they have been working on a high-Mpix sensor, I'm sure they have been working on a high-DR sensor too, but the fact that they managed to make it economically viable for a $15K camera doesn't mean they also have a design that is economically viable for a $3K camera. Maybe it's there, maybe it's not. We'll see.

Makes perfect sense in my opinion! What do you guys think?

Possible especially with Nikon being absent from the 4k scene (are they even at the NAB?). But Canon still has to keep an eye on Sony, Panasonic and now Samsung, So even if Canon adds 4k to the 5d IV there would still be very definite differences between it and the c100 II. For example continuous recording, xlr audio, ND filters, scopes, peaking, form factor and more. If Canon decides to include 4k in the 5D IV it will not be released anytime soon, I would say at least six months and more likely 1 year. This will help them sell the C100 II, on the other hand the C100 II has many formidable competition especially with the new announcement of the the URSA Mini assuming it gets shipped soon.

Nikon is indeed at the NAB, talking workflow and so on.

"Canon Watch" is mongering that there will be two more MK IV models - one geared toward the stills (that EOSHD has brought up as having only 1080p) and another (which might be called 5D C) toward video, making it four different 5D models out there.

The happiest people on the planet from these prognosticated developments will obviously be folks at Planet5D.

Here's my take of that story: An unnamed guy who claims to have talked to a "Canon rep" "off the record" at a show emails a guy who doesn't have anything good to say about Canon DSLRs so he can post a story critical of an unannounced future camera.
Lately there were rumors at Canonrumors.com (which is much more credible) that the next 5D was going to use the same tech as the C300 II to get 4k. But you know what? I dreamed that I talked to a guy who's friends with a guy who overheard a Canon guy say that the 5D is going to be 22stops of DR and output 8k! Let's put it on the front page as news!

^ That. And it's not just something about this eoshd story, it's just how the rumor business works.

And yes, until Canon proves it is capable of selling a DSLR with more than 12 stops of DR, I'm also more interested in whether Samsung is going to add a full-dynamic-range gamma curve to the NX1 than in whatever Canon is working on.

Yea...rumors are just rumors...I know how it works...although I feel that Canon should be in a big dilemma about the possibility of putting 4k in the next 5D. Despite the lack of XLRs, NDs etc, I believe that a 4k 5D would absolutely cut sales from their C100II, unless of course they give it a huge price...but then, they would lose the photdogs...
By the way...Im also very interested in Samsung's offerings...I guess Im just giving Canon a last chance to keep me as a customer hahaha....XC10 was not what I was expecting:-(

I would suspect the mark IV to be specifically targeted to stills folks with some video afterthought tacked on. Canon never seems to be willing to self-cannibalize.

Canon, regardless of their current line-up will HAVE TO make the IV a 4K camera..... all the other brands are doing it, and switching brand is not nearly as hard as one should think anymore. Especially not if you are inclined to go Sony instead, that would give you even better lenses if you are carrying Canon gear around. If the IV is not a 4K camera with at least as good an image as the C300 1st gen I won't be upgrading my III, instead I will look towards Sony or Panasonic.

And I'm pretty sure they wont target the IV at stills people, since that is the purpose of the 5Ds and 5Dr which is coming out in June.

The IV most likely won't be coming out until early 2016, so don't hold your breath. Rumor has it that there will also be a 6D mk II some time after the IV starts shipping.

They have 5Ds and 5Dr for the stills shooters and have declared that they want to make products with much less of an overlap than they had done before.

That implies a 4K camera (with a reasonable stills performance) in the 5D class. Final specs and the date of release are anyone's guess, however.

I'll be pretty happy if they put the 1DC's 4k video in the 5D4 for $3k. Needs to do at least 60fps in HD, though...
