Thoughts on rumored 5D Mark IV

I would actually be happy if it was just 1080P (4k down sampled)....but it shot C-Log 1 & 2 and had at least 60fps in 1080P at 422. If it could just do that...and was sub $3k....I would jump on it.

It would effectively be a C100 without ND and XLR....but could take stills and cut with the Cinema EOS perfectly. That would be a great, cheap, B cam. Also perfect for gimbal use.

And I'm pretty sure they wont target the IV at stills people, since that is the purpose of the 5Ds and 5Dr which is coming out in June.

50MP of the 5DS and 5DS R is a lot. Not many people need wall sized prints. Handling and storing the 50MP files is not easy. It is a niche area.

After the introduction of the 50mp bodies with a Fuji-like focus on video, meaning no focus at all, I think the 5d line will get more fractured (specialized) when the 5d3 is replaced. Since its a staple of wedding/event shooters, I think the 5d4 will get improved AF, better buffer and so on while getting a modest bump in MP and 60p. At the same time Canon will drop a 5d with dual pixel AF, swivel screen, Clog and 60/120p - but no 4k to protect the cinema line. The next 1dx probably gets 4k, but not the 5d. Time will tell, but I can't see anything being announced until the 50mp bodies have been out for a few months so nothing steals their thunder - so that would put it later this year at the earliest. Just my opinion. Canon doesn't have a track record of kitchen sink cameras stuffed all the goodies and I'm thinking Nikon beats them to the punch with 4k.

There are plenty of reasons to have a high pixel count imagery beside the large size prints.

I hope Canon will NOT do a one version of 5D IV. If they will there are going to be some sacrifices made and 100% they'll be on a video side.

Not the least of which is that for Advertising it is essential and if we ever want to get away from the ergonomic nightmare which digital medium format has become, this is the way to do it.

According to Canon Rumors, some form/s of the next gen 5D has been released to the selected shooters for the in-the-field trials. No more details are available.

I'm very curious to see how they are going to make this one..... with that completely rediculos amount of cameras they have floating around competing against each other while not over shining the C series.
They would sell so much more cameras if they shaved down their line-up to 2 C-series cameras, 2 semi-pro video biased DSLRs, 2 semi-pro still biased DSLRs and then a couple of those consumer crap thingys.

4k 60fps, better dynamic range, trickle the AF up to the 5D and then maybe a stop better DR with a more durable codec. Price point should not exceed the current 5D price by a lot.

I would love to see them do something different. I would LOVE a 1080P camera that shot LOG and had high speed. 1080P raw would be amazing. If they were smart, they would just hire the ML guys and refine what they do. Make a nice compressed RAW 1080P camera. The tech is already there. They would sell a ton!

Yet we all know they will do none of the above! :) I am sure meetings about what "not" to put in the thing are longer than what to put in the thing. It will probably have the 4k still mode thing and some form of 4k video recording. But solid, true 1080p60 would be enough if the DR is improved. But I admit, I do not care about Canon as much as I used to.

They can do a "nice" 1080p hybrid for under $2K, leaving a 4K-4-$4K hybrid where 5D used to be.

BTW, there's also a discussion on CR about the newer, more powerful video engines. Hypothetically, one could double up on DIGIC6 types but that may require heat sinks and a larger body, much closer to 1D than to 5D. 5D S/R have dual DIGIC6 but they may be slightly limited.

On the other hand, 50 MPX x 5fps = 250 and should be enough for 8.8 MPX x 24 though (assuming the same color depth). The rest is buffer. (OK, in the video mode, those dual DIGIC6's could overheat in a smaller size body)

Yep, absolutely right. There is no way on earth they would do this. Canon is not "that" type of company...unfortunately. Nonetheless, I'm a sucker for their cameras. Damn it.

Frankly speaking we all differentiate and give different packages at different costs to our clients. If the client is not willing to spend much, are you still going to shoot with your C300/F5/F55/Epics or whatever is your top end camera?

Despite the internet warriors trashing the 5D, I still get requests from producers who want to shoot in 5D. That camera has an enormous brand pull. And Canon is serious about the 5D series. Don't expect to be able to buy it before Q1 2016.

So, off CR, 5D MK IV may - or may not be - announced in September at the Canon Expo and released early'2016 but it's more likely that 1D X2 will be out before that. They cite the company's lack of desire to interfere with the C300 MK II launch as the cause for the 5D MK IV delay.

But you make it sound like the 5D has something to offer other than a cheap price point. If only we on the tech side of the production had more experience with the Sony cams then I think a lot of us would suggest that productions use the A series more and more in the future.

Canon Rumors is blogging that 4K is 50/50 (and I don't mean resolution) on these new replacements. IMO, Canon is blowing major smoke up folks' butts on this one. If D5 has 4K and A7RII has 4K, then 5D MK IV and 1D X2 will have to have 4K as well. Naturally, the video features will be crippled in some form in order to protect C300 MK II ... but they don't talk about that at all.

Northlight is hearing that MK IV will - PROBABLY - have a 24 MPX sensor but isn't likely to appear until Q1 2016.

Canon Rumors writes that there is none and they think it's odd on the one hand but also explainable on the other, as Canon will probably concentrate on 1D X2 before releasing 5D MK IV. It would also make sense not to go head to head with A7RII.

Get a 5D Mark IV/5DX/5DC/a7SIII/a9S for 4K Shooting Instead
Don't get me wrong. The a7RII is a great camera. Even for 4K Video. But it's not perfect and it will not satisfy a certain cinematographer. I'm referring to a run & gun type of filmmaker. So, here are some alternatives you can get if your'e looking for something more "perfect-ish".-Canon 5D Mark IV-Canon 5DX-Canon 5DC-Sony a7SIII-Sony a9SWhy get a Canon 5D Mark IV/5DX/5DC?- Much tougher build than Sony- They are very reliable unlike Sony- Zero Major Flaw- Extremely slow release cycle a.k.a future proof & slow price drop- Bigger and Longer Battery life than Sony- No need metabones adapter if you have Canon GlassWhy get a Sony a7SIII/a9S?- Very subtle flaws compared to a7RII and a7SII- No overheating issues (Both a7RII and a7SII have)- Touch Screen- Slightly Bigger and Longer Battery Life on the a9S- 4K at 120fps- Many more features than the Canon 5D Mark IV/5DX/5DC but not as reliable- A few hundred dollars cheaper than Canon DSLRs- Small, Compact & Powerful- Always the latest in technology Are you able to bare with 4K Video on the a7RII?-YES for Scripted Short-Films, Music Video, Etc-NO for Documentary, Wedding, Event, Run & Gun Style, EtcWhy you should not get the a7SII and wait for a7SIII or a9S-Likely to have identical overheating Issues as the a7RII due to same body-Same short battery life as the a7RII-No Touch Screen
