Think we'll ever have a fest in which no one dies?

Wow, if this happens...Charli would have finally been the first person to choose a fest theme. After every fest, there's that one "and the next fest will be..." thread and this time Charli chose it right off the bat!

Good work and great idea,

Kegan

Kegan - lol, I actually never thought of that! Now, how is it that a girl who loves to write action flicks comes up with an idea of no one dying during a fest? Strange things happen in this DVXuser universe. Strange indeed.

Looking over my top 100 Films of all Time, tryin' to find ones without Death making an appearance...

I had Mary Poppins, but then I remembered the banker dies laughing...
I had E.T., but then remembered E.T. technically dies himself (flatlines)...
You can't count Singin' in the Rain, because "Dueling Caviler" bit sees characters ran through with a sword...
I can't count 12 Angry Men seeing as it is a murder trial they are deciding...
I can't count Dr. Strangelove, because...well, you know (kaboom!)
I had A Christmas Story, but remembered Black Bart's gang members have "X's" on their eyes after being shot by Ralphie in his fantasy.

So all I ended up with was:
The Sound of Music
An American in Paris
American Graffiti
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Apollo 13

(but not that Death didn't audition for at least a few of those 5)

Bottom Line:
Death = Story/Drama

...wait, was the gas in Close Encounters lethal? When Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon and the other cat (who does get gassed) were climbing the mountain to get to the LZ? 'Cause if so, you can scratch that one off.

Yeah your right Callaghan perhaps it would be better to define the crippling lack of originality via the incorporation of deaths in many dvxuser films rather than just say death itself being the problem.

Personally speaking, for me the problem is when we get something like betrayel fest - and then we get 'ho hum' 10x films about cheating wives getting shot by jealous enraged husbands. Its the lazy way (for me) that guns are used to end character conflicts in crappy dramas (in general.)

Guns do look a bit rubbish. Now knives on the other hand, that makes things so much more personal!

The problem is, death in a feature film of two hours length can feel earned, or be payed off in some way. In a six minute short, it becomes entirely about the death. Now that doesn't mean death can't be handled in an artistic fashion, take this fests "On Our Terms." But it is ABOUT the deaths. It would be difficult to incorporate death into a six minute film without it dominating. Even a film like Saving Private Ryan isn't ABOUT the deaths (although there are many).

Lmao, I was on page four when I remembered something:

I'm currently reading a hook about writing short films and in one of the first exercises I had to write something. And guess what, the short story that I wrote was all about death and guns. Lol but I think with the editing "vision" I have in my head it could come out a good life story instead of just a Freddie Wong-wanna be shoot em up video

I will invite this challenge! It's a great idea and will definitely push us to stretch our imaginations more. of course right now I'm looking at the script I'm writing and wondering if 20 deaths in as much pages may be a little too much.... hrmmm

Rod - if they are evil, they should die no matter the number. lol

Conflict = Drama = Story

Amen! All this talk of non-violence is getting me violent :evil:. It's a conspiracy I tells ya. :happy: No love for the lowly armorer.

Sorry, I'm punchy. No sleep in the past 26 hrs and none foreseen in the next 12. I put the audio gear back on for film gigs.
