I think we had 11 in this fest that died or were dead plus a spaceship full of aliens (umpteen) of them.

Hmmm, have we had a fest where not one single person died?
 
Well, I think in ZombieFest there were no ... oh, wait, I lie.

In HorrorFest we... no, not there either...

Maybe LoveFest?

Maybe this would be a theme for a new fest -- LifeFest, in which the required element is that nobody dies...
 
Did someone die in Bright Lights or Vomit? I mean, the guy in the latter did have a bad date, but no one lost their life over it.
 
And no one died in 'Comatose Conundrum'.

And come'on, there is a difference between someone dying in the short, or say, having the twist be that someone was dead :)
 
I think having no guns and no deaths would be an AMAZING required element! Maybe give it a shot in lieu of the typical drama fest?

I didn't mean every entry had someone die, I mean a fest where NO ONE dies at all. Or is dead. Or presumed dead. Or a ghost. I don't think we've ever had that happen before. In each and every fest in one or more films, someone dies... sometimes it's the storyline, but hey, that happens.
 
No, I understood, and I agree -- I've frequently wanted to have a fest where "no guns allowed" and "no white guys in sunglasses and dark suits allowed" and whatnot... but I think the challenge of telling a story where nobody dies -- that's going to be a challenge for some folks, and the fests have frequently been about stretching our filmmakers' creative muscles by putting some thematic restrictions on them. So -- make a film where nobody dies -- I kind of like it...
 
Sweet, Barry, now I think I'm gonna have to kill you, bawwhahahahahaha. Okay, the joke works better if you were right here. It would be interesting to see if our directors can pull it off.
 
Regarding this particular topic. I've been working with another writer on outlining and finding the beats for a feature drama we're about to write. Thankfully we have got the outline finished without any tragedies or deaths. Getting characters to make changes in a film is easy with a "bolt of lightning" such as a death or tragedy. I think that's why we see it used so often, especially in drama films.
 
Death is a common element of storytelling. Love, power, food, security -- things we are trying for, obstacles to overcome and the realities when we don't get those things.

And I believe that the dvxfest films are fairly representative of the feature films out there -- most containing elements of death. Even wacky comedies have death.

However, I do think it would be an interesting challenge for a fest, but I'm not sure if it would garner the results we are all hoping for though. But who knows.

Nobody dies, as in during the story? Did you ever see my entry for LossFest, Ossian? In it, no one dies, though a central character was a dead baby in a chest (who had died before the story even began) and the story was dealing with this.

I think its an interesting concept to require no death or tragedy. Im guessing there'll be a lot of comedies. Personally though I love tragic tales, especially when the protagonist needs to overcome said tragedy. Life is like a box of chocolates and all after all.
 
Guys, the original topic wasn't "have we ever had a film entered in a fest that didn't involve death"... the topic was "have we ever had a fest, where nobody in any film died at all?" Have we ever had an entire fest where not one of the entries relied on death?

I'm pretty sure we haven't, and probably for the exact reasons that AJ Brooks outlined above. But sometimes with the fests we like to take away crutches and see how the filmmakers react, using their creativity to overcome an obstacle we put in their way. I would absolutely love to see an entire fest with NO GUNS ALLOWED. :thumbsup:
