Taking Advantage - Blue Light Pictures

Yeah, tried getting in on the fests a few times before and it never worked out. Finally a get into my first DVXfest and it's with 2 films. Guess I'm making up for lost time.
 
How is the footage from the 7D coming out? I'm thinking about getting the new 550D because it's almost identical to 7D.

the footage of 7D looks great... yeah I heard 550D is half of the price and video quality and functionality is almost the same!
 
what render settings did you end up using? also, great animatronic for your storyboard. is that hard to do? it looks very time consuming.

I ended up with exporting MP4 straight from Media Encoder... we'll see how it holds up... I am not good at finding the best encoding setting... just tried to stay within the file size limit and got as much as quality as possible..

The animated storyboard was not hard to do at all... once I got a hang of the software, it's all the matter of setting up the scenes, with props and characters, then camera... that's it... and yes.. it's time consuming but it helped me a lot... and helped other crews to see my vision without extensive explanation :-)
 
Media Encoder wa treating me nicely... until I viewed it in Quicktime. And then everything devolved into a new state of hell for me... I'm so going to welcome the upgrades to the system, just so we're not fighting differences in Mac and PC because one doesn't like to play well with the other. It sucks to have a perfect render playing well on everything else and then Quicktime be the one sore spot.. and the one application that most of eveyone will be using to view the films and judging you harshly on.
 
I had to export from Media Encoder to a Quicktime file (1.5GB) then from there had to futz around with the settings. But FIRST I had to export to a quicktime file that worked and didn't mess up my lighting by making everything brighter. Then spent the next couple of hours doing render after render trying to get the right filesize.


Fact: Quicktime is a piece of ****. At least Media Encoder tells you the size the file is LIKELY to be. Quicktime just give you the middle finger and wishes you good luck.
 
Ah... I see... I was playing with that too... generated a highest quality quicktime possible (mine was almost 8GB), then use Quicktime Pro to export to mp4... and you were right... it never tells you the file size would be... and if I didn't touch anything, my gamma got screwed up... and I was trying to play with Filter... and it's really hard to see with that tiny preview window... it sucks! I gave up mid way... coz I couldn't get it to where I wanted.... but maybe I should have kept playing... dammit
 
This one felt so much longer than 6 minutes. Just a great job on all counts. Acting was great and I did not see the Triple cross coming at all. The lighting was very well done. Great film!!!
 
Visually it looks very good, but I wasn't a fan of the acting (notably the wife).

I did really like the scene where the husband is walking around prepping his story though and then when the other girl was revealed to be in the room.
 
Visually this is the most professional and biggest pleasure to view so far that I have seen out of the 6 or so I've seen so far...the acting was decent to great. The main actor older guy in particular stood out as extremely professional and one of the best actors so far I've seen (probably the best) and the younger girl wasn't bad at all either in fact very good. Very professionally done, this is one of the strongest I've seen so far. Oh and the music was amongst the best I've heard so far as well.
 
I thought the acting was spot on, visually appealing and overall well done. I didn't really care for the shooting scene, it seemed a little rushed but a very complete storyline which is #1 with me. Great Job!
 
My critique for Taking Advantage
The story:
From the beginning to the end, I was into it. Very creative plot and the each character was very complicated in his/her own way. Good job!

The acting:
TOP OF THE LINE! I didn't even see a HINT of amateur acting in this. Great casting choices - cast is perfect for this story.

The camerawork:
I noticed a glitch in the special effects with the blood/gun shot but other than that, it was fine. Every shot was motivated and contributed greatly to the story

The editing:
Very smooth and pushed the story forward yet took time to get into the characters. AMAZING!

The sound and music:
Music was great -- sound looked like it was done professionally.

Overall impression:
Inspiring -- overall a great story!
