GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

stinkin $400 GoPro can do RAW (sort of), why not our GH4? :) sounds good to me. But if they accomplish RAW, surely 10bir or 422 or both could be options as well.

While GoPro might call what they do 'RAW' it is not RAW. Nothing like RAW!

what gopro call RAW is just them using native ISO, White balance and zero sharpening. It is not RAW!!! They should just call it 'Native' as that's what it really is. Very misleading on their part and plain false advertising.

So if they add RAW what file format is that? Cinema DNG? I've never worked with it before.

Personally I would love ProRes to be added.

Assuming it may be DNG, if you get this product and Cineform then RAW becomes a breeze http://raw4pro.com/ . Been using it with BMPCC and it is just what the doctor ordered. Manageable file sizes, direct clip colour grading with 3d LUTS. The ability to tweak white balance, exposure, sharpness etc after the fact and with superior debayer make this a no brainer. As it is a wavelet based Codec you can determine CPU usage and you can even edit on a modest setup. Actually as far as size goes, Cineform RAW comes out in the same ballpark as high quality Prores. It's a home run IMHO.
Regards

I would not like it if it was RAW, if I wanted to shoot RAW I would've got something else like a BM camera. The main reason I stuck with GH4 is because of the more compressed files that still have some latitude in post, RAW brings on a new set of headaches from storage to computer horsepower.

Adding raw capability wouldn't replace the existing video settings. You'd still be able to use the more compressed codecs that you (and I for that matter) love. The {possible} raw update would just be another option to use if/when necessary.

The Shogun is slated to record Cinema DNG. And Atomos has ben working closely with the Japanese manufacturers. Just a thought. Would be magic if it was RAW

I second that!

Yeah, I would be surprised by a RAW option from Panasonic, it seems to me that generally Panasonic wants to make products that fit into end-to-end workflows and at the same time they always have an eye on what Sony and Canon are doing (mostly Sony). However, the GH product team does seem to do things a little outside the box so who knows.

Well to me a surprise would be to do with the codecs available and be either on or off board RAW, AVC Ultra or Prores. Can't see much else making as big a splash. If we got any of those I reckon I would be happy for a while

Panasonic did just recently license ProRes from Atomos.

Now that would be awesome! Being able to record to ProRes in camera.
It's always much better to work in a edit friendly format in your NLE of choice, instead of working in H264 (which is really a camera acquisition or file delivery format)
even though the computer may be fast enough to handle it.

It would seem weird that Atomos would license a codec to Panasonic for internal records thus rendering the Shogun useless for most GH4 users.

Umm duh... yes I know that but we were talking about a rumored h.264 with 4:2:2 10 bit sampling that I would love over the RAW.

Just to add regarding the ProRes rumor, in the article it clearly states that there needs to be dedicated hardware to encode ProRes, unless the Panasonic engineers accounted for this extra hardware during their R&D for the GH4 I don't think it will be able to do it internally. Highly unlikely for ProRes to be true.

I think they could add ProRes by updating the FPGA image (if they are even using one). Even though that will take a fair amount of fabric, the bigger question is how the heck are they going to store the resulting file? I read somewhere that ProRes HQ is about 117 MB/s for FHD. That equates to around 470 Mb/s right?

Small correction - Megabits not Megabytes. Uncompressed FHD is around that 117 MB/s data rate. Prores HQ is about 20 something megabytes/s. But for 4k the numbers may be closer to what you wrote.

Why would Panasonic be licensing ProRes from Atomos? I would think they would be licensing it from Apple?
