GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

Don't Micro P2 cards require additional pins/contacts, that the GH4 doesn't have? I'm sure they're made to revert to a lower speed when they're put in a normal SD/SDXC device, but I doubt that would be much faster than a fast normal card.

This rumor has me really intrigued. So much so that I cancelled a Pocket backorder. OK, this isn't the only reason for canceling the Pocket order but it was a "good enough excuse". :violin:

This might be a very stupid question but what is "Log" ? And what makes it better than for example Cine-D?

It's not a stupid question at all. Log is short for logarithmic gamma curve. The gamma curve (or gamma correction) is part of the capturing and playback process of video signals (deriving from when CRTs were still used in cameras).
But in my opinion what Panasonic calls the cinelike-D gamma curve is already emphasizing dynamic range and is therefore probably some kind of log gamma curve that (in layman's terms) brightens the dark regions of the image and darkens the bright regions in order to preserve as much detail there as possible. But I may be wrong about what Panasonic's "cine-d" actually is since I can't find the actual graph showing the function anywhere...

Yeah, but CinelikeD is to orange for me (people look like oompa loompas). Very hard to get skin tones right, I'm hoping Log will come soon and be a better alternative to CinelikeD.

LOG is really quite different to Cine-D and is not really an alternative, Cine-D is a Cine Gamma which is an in between in terms of flatness compared to LOG which is ultra flat to the point where you might underexpose very often if you never worked with it before. On a compressed format like we're shooting with the GH4 it's not too good an idea to shoot so flat and push pull the image so much thinking like it's RAW but it's not even 10 bit sampling.

I guess if the orange really was that big of a problem then a simple solution for them is to tweak the profile's color science.

Cinelike-D is plenty flat for me, we really don't need LOG especially if we are recording at 4:2:0 8bit sub sampling.

Internal recording of LOG would be pointless, but recording it externally in 10bit 4:2:2 would be a huge hit for a lot of folks.

Personally, I do not find Cinelike-D too orange. What I have discovered is that the Gh4's Tungsten White Balance preset tends to make things a bit warm. Also, the Daylight preset tends to make LED and Kino-Flo lighting a little warm. Setting a custom white balance under these light sources helps a lot. Or just dialing in a higher Kelvin temperature.

Not sure what to think about the idea of a LOG profile for the GH4. On one hand, themac is right in that the camera is only 8-bit, so a LOG profile might not be wise.
On the other hand, the Canon C300 is also 8-bit, and C-LOG is amazing. And the GH4 has 10-bit output to a recorder, so combined with something like the Shogun, LOG would be more useful.

Did all of that and still get orange skin tones (in CinelikeD). Sticking with CinelikeV and Natural for now.

One more thing you can do besides changing color temperature is to edit the hue so perhaps pushing the hue in custom white balance away from orange will help.

I don't think Log is a bad thing in 8-bit. As long as Panasonic executes it correctly. C-Log on the C100 is great, and that's only 8-bit 4:2:0. It's just a matter of how far you push it and pull it in post. Use your YC Waveform and RGB Parade; then you'll have an accurate idea of how much you can rescue.

...I really think it might be 4K 60p at 150 Mbps, just like the new Panasonic X1000 ENG camera. ( the X1000 has two Venus image processors, so maybe this isn't possible with the GH4 )
